11/21: Lecturer Cristina Araujo Brinkerhoff (PhD’23) Invited to Present Keynote Speech at Int’l Public Policy Forum in Brazil
BU School of Social Work (BUSSW) lecturer and alum Cristina Araujo Brinkerhoff (PhD’23) will be the keynote speaker at an international public policy symposium taking place in Vitória, Brazil, Nov. 21-23.
In her presentation, “Building Healthy Communities: The Global is Local,” Dr. Brinkerhoff will explore migration, particularly, Brazilian migration to Massachusetts; culture and the importance of networks; and how public structures can support vulnerable individuals, families and communities. She will also discuss how these interconnected factors align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Dr. Cristina Araujo Brinkerhoff is a full-time lecturer in BUSSW’s Macro Social Work Department. A community-engaged scholar and advocate for social and racial justice, Brinkerhoff, in partnership with the Brazilian Worker Center, has been instrumental in significant legislative efforts, including the passage of the Work and Family Mobility Act in Massachusetts, and serves as director of research, evaluation, and development at the Brazilian Worker Center in Boston. Her dissertation – grounded in her lived experience as an immigrant – explored the social networks of Brazilian immigrant mothers and their impact on mental health and well-being.
