This online course is self-paced and is designed as reading-based course with interactive multimedia components including simulations, video, audio, and discussion boards.

SBIRT is an evidence-based practice used to identify, reduce, and prevent problematic use, abuse, and dependence on alcohol and illicit drugs. Coupled with “motivational interviewing,” in which the clinician partners with the client to make decisions about the client’s care, SBIRT is used in primary care practices, hospitals, clinics, emergency rooms, college and university health services, employee assistance programs and a range of community settings. SBIRT has three steps:

  • Screening: Universal brief screening for all clients to assess alcohol, illicit drugs, and prescription drug use and misuse.
  • Brief Intervention: A motivational and awareness-raising intervention for those whose drinking or drug use is risky or problematic.
  • Referral to Treatment: This may consist of a few treatment sessions for those whose pattern is less severe, or specialized alcohol and other drug (AOD) treatment for those who have a substance use disorder.

SBIRT is a public health approach—it focuses on prevention and early intervention. It is designed for use with every client who comes in the door, thus, entire groups and populations (e.g., all emergency room patients; all new nursing home residents) can be assessed and assisted, if necessary.

After successfully completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Define SBIRT and its three components
  • Explain the purpose of SBIRT
  • Describe SBIRT’s value for clients and families, social workers and counselors and other human service professionals, and the health care system as a whole
  • Explain how you would apply SBIRT to your clinical work
