The Anti–Oppressive Learning and Practice Labs are hosted by Boston University School of Social Work’s Equity and Inclusion Committee. These monthly events will take place virtually and cover a variety topics related to social justice, equity and inclusion, and social work with an emphasis on critical reflection, building skills, and collective action. Our learning labs are open to BUSSW faculty, staff, and students and will follow a workshop format. During the first 30 minutes, there will be a presentation on a specific anti–oppressive practice technique. The final 30 minutes of the lab will give participants the opportunity to reflect on their experiences individually and collectively, engage in whole group discussions, and practice skills in breakout rooms. Cultivating an anti-oppressive teaching pedagogy requires a commitment to ongoing critical reflection and the capacity to deconstruct assumptions about the world. Instructors, staff, and PhD students will have the opportunity to meet individually with the associate dean of equity & inclusion to reflect on anti-oppressive frameworks, classroom dynamics, and course content. In order to learn how we, as social workers, can reimagine abortion access and reproductive health services in the U.S., the Equity & Inclusion Committee held monthly reproductive justice learning communities throughout the 2022-2023 academic year. The initiative featured speakers and trainers from local reproductive health organizations and abortion fund agencies. Stay tuned for information about upcoming events!
