{"id":29,"date":"2011-09-28T13:32:57","date_gmt":"2011-09-28T17:32:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sscores\/?page_id=29"},"modified":"2011-11-16T14:06:01","modified_gmt":"2011-11-16T19:06:01","slug":"robert-lafyatis-md","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sscores\/principal-investigators\/robert-lafyatis-md\/","title":{"rendered":"Robert Lafyatis, MD"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>SScores Director; Administrative Core PI<\/h3>\n<p>Dr. Lafyatis came to scleroderma research under the tutelage of Dr. Joseph Korn, his supervisor and mentor until his death 5 years ago. <a href=\"\/sscores\/files\/2011\/09\/photo21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-30\" title=\"photo2[1]\" src=\"\/sscores\/files\/2011\/09\/photo21-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"photo2[1]\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Dr. Lafyatis began his career studying fibroblast biology at the National Institutes of Health under Dr. Ronald Wilder. He continued his training at the National Institutes of Health in the laboratory of Dr. Michael Sporn, the discoverer of TGF\u03b2, where he gained experience in both cytokine and molecular biology. Embarking on his own research career at the Pasteur Institut in France, he cloned an autoantigen using rheumatoid synovial fluid and showed the molecular function of this autoantigen as a regulator of alternative splicing. Through these studies he developed strong expertise in the biology of TGF\u03b2, and cell and molecular biology.
