TA work averages out to 10 hours per week over the semester.\u00a0 This may be more or less in some weeks, depending on the flow of the course. General position expectations include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Attends on-campus class sessions<\/li>\n<li>Assists instructor with course management (Blackboard, preparing presentations, copying, distributing, and collecting course materials, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Assists instructor with development or editing of course materials<\/li>\n<li>Holds weekly office hours and\/or review sessions<\/li>\n<li>Arranges for outside speakers and guest lecturers<\/li>\n<li>Responds promptly and professionally to e-mail requests<\/li>\n<li>Evaluates student performance on homework sets, quizzes, examinations, and papers<\/li>\n<li>Refers students to SPH Tutoring and Peer Coach Programs<\/li>\n<li>Communicates regularly with instructor<\/li>\n<li>Maintains confidentiality of student records and performance in accordance with FERPA<\/li>\n<li>Performs other tasks as assigned by faculty<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Remote Work <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Teaching Assistants cannot engage in remote work (e.g., attend class via Zoom, work out of state, etc.) unless the course has an \u201cOL\u201d (online) designation.<\/li>\n<li>The University is obligated by federal law to review and approve I-9 work authorization documentation in-person.<\/li>\n<li>International Teaching Assistants engaged in remote work are at risk of violating the conditions of their visa relative to work location.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Whether you are a new or experienced teaching assistant, it is important to have a conversation with your instructor at the beginning of the semester about their expectations regarding your contribution to the course. Each course presents unique challenges and different instructors may have different expectations. Ensuring that all members of the instructional team are on the same page will result in a better experience for yourself, the course instructor, and your students.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h6 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Required Trainings<\/h6><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Title IX training and resources: Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 requires universities to respond promptly and effectively to complaints of all kinds of sexual misconduct, including sexual harassment and sexual violence<\/li>\n<li>Classroom technology demonstration and contacts: You will become familiar with classroom technology and gain hands-on experience before the start of the semester by attending a classroom demonstration\/training with Ed Media. The status will be selected via a drop-down menu with the following options:\n<ul>\n<li>Awaiting approval<\/li>\n<li>Needs follow-up<\/li>\n<li>Ready to hire<\/li>\n<li>Hired<\/li>\n<li>Ineligible to TA<\/li>\n<li>Canceled<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>If a particular request will require additional follow up with the TA, the status will say \u201cNeeds follow-up\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h6 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Hiring<\/h6><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>The TA hiring process will be administered departmentally following the steps below:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check HR and employment eligibility based on BU guidelines, policies, and restrictions.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once TA passes SPH Education screening checkpoint, the department may send a notification e-mail to the TA indicating that they have been <\/span><b>conditionally approved<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to TA for the semester, pending successful hire into the system.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any\u00a0 violations of the 20-hour work week policy for graduate students serving as TAs, any hours in excess of 20 hours per week,\u00a0 will be charged at time and a half per hour to the faculty member\u2019s discretionary account. Whenever discretionary account funds shall be insufficient to cover such charges, departmental funds will need to fund this unapproved overage.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collect and process relevant TA paperwork and employment authorization forms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hire TA into student employment and\/or HR system.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Send TA payment confirmation detailing their payment distribution for the semester and direct deposit instructions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Update request status on TA request tracking spreadsheet to \u201cHired\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Please note that TAs <em>cannot<\/em> begin working until they have completed the necessary hiring paperwork\/work authorization and have received notification of approval via the department. Certain staff members of the BU community may qualify to serve as TAs, provided that serving in this role will not conflict with their core duties as a staff member.\u00a0 The following conditions apply:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Full-time staff who are also part-time students are not eligible to serve as TAs.<\/li>\n<li>Only\u00a0<strong>exempt <\/strong>level staff are eligible to be engaged as TAs (e.g. paid semi-monthly).<\/li>\n<li>The maximum service that any staff member can serve as TA for is one course (4 credits) per calendar year. Overbase payment applies to any staff engagement as TA.<\/li>\n<li>For centrally funded staff positions, time allocated toward TA duties cannot occur within an employee\u2019s regularly scheduled work hours for their staff position. De-minimis use of email during regular work hours toward TA duties is at the discretion of the staff member\u2019s manager as long as it remains just that \u2013 minimal in nature \u2013 and does not conflict with the duties and responsibilities of the staff member\u2019s full-time position.<\/li>\n<li>Research staff funded from sponsored programs must comply with the University\u2019s\u00a0<span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/researchsupport\/project-lifecycle\/managing-an-award\/effort\/\">effort reporting requirements<\/a><\/span>, and PIs must ensure that effort is reported accurately. It is the PI who determines whether serving in a TA role would interfere with an employee\u2019s core duties as a staff member. Therefore, the staff member may serve as a TA if they receive written PI permission to engage in such duties, whereby the PI attests that they will ensure that research staff devote the reported effort to sponsored projects. There should not be a need for staff grant effort reduction unless the PI provides alternative guidance.\n<ul>\n<li>100% grant-funded staff may only TA for a maximum of <strong>two<\/strong> <strong>semesters<\/strong> <strong>total<\/strong> while in fully-grant funded positions, in order to remain compliant with effort reporting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Unless there is documented Provost approval, no full-time staff may serve as instructor or co-instructor for any course.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h6 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Alumni\/Unaffiliated<\/h6><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Any SPH Alumni that have been involved in an Academic Misconduct Incident are automatically\u00a0<strong>ineligible<\/strong>\u00a0to TA.<\/li>\n<li>Cannot serve as a TA for <strong>three<\/strong> consecutive semesters.
