Most students are on F1 visas which allows them to conduct <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/isso\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Optional Practical Training (OPT)<\/em><\/a> for one year after they graduate (they must apply via the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/isso\/employment-internships\/student-off-campus-work-and-training\/curricular-practical-training-cpt-f-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BU International Students &amp; Scholars Office<\/a>.).\u00a0 Students who are completing certificates in Epidemiology &amp; Biostatistics, Environmental Health, and Design and Conduct of Clinical Trials are also eligible for an additional length of time under the government&#8217;s STEM rule (currently an additional 17 months).\u00a0 See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/files\/2019\/04\/Tips-for-International-Students-Searching-for-Jobs-in-the-United-States.pdf\">job search strategies for international students<\/a> seeking positions in the United States.<\/p>\n<p><strong>International students must know their visa status at all times, and it can vary by visa type. <\/strong>We encourage students to meet with an ISSO representative early in their time here to learn the regulations, requirements, timelines, etc.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/isso\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BU International Students &amp; Scholars Office<\/a> staff stay up-to-date with any changes in the law.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If students are seeking on-campus positions, they should also consult with ISSO to ensure they are following legal guidelines as well as BU policies and procedures.<\/li>\n<li>Important:\u00a0 Once an international student graduates, they are NO longer in <em>student visa status<\/em> and therefore can not continue working on campus or in a volunteer position off campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Practicum Advising for International Students<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>International Students who are on an F1 Visa must follow <em>Curricular Practical Training (CPT)<\/em> guidelines in accordance with the United States Federal Government when completing their practicum.\u00a0 International students must <strong>wait 2 <u>full<\/u> semesters<\/strong> before becoming eligible to conduct a U.S. based Practicum which requires CPT approval from the ISSO.\u00a0 <span class=\"jcefile\">International students may only complete what is required of the MPH program which is 240 hours with one organization, and practicums can be PAID OR UNPAID.*\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"jcefile\">International students must go through the Practicum Portal approval process \u2014 and in ADDITION \u2014 must have their practicum authorized by ISSO to be used as CPT.\u00a0 International students can NOT begin their practicum, including any kind of Orientation at the practicum site, without ISSO authorization.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li>CPT cannot be processed for authorization until a student is registered for PH976 (which is only done after the Practicum Portal Proposal is approved).<\/li>\n<li>A CPT form should be signed by a Practicum Manager and listed as the Practicum Instructor or Advisor.<\/li>\n<li><span class=\"jcefile\">Students must contact the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/isso\/employment-internships\/student-off-campus-work-and-training\/curricular-practical-training-cpt-f-1\/\">ISSO to apply for CPT<\/a>, and should leave 1-2 weeks (before their proposed practicum start date) to go through this additional authorization step.\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"jcefile\">Failure to gain CPT authorization before beginning their practicum could result in a violation of their immigration status.\u00a0 In this case, students will be asked to leave the United States to re-apply for their Visa and will lose Optional Practical Training (OPT) privileges. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>For Off-Cycle International Students:\u00a0<\/strong> International students who begin the MPH program in the Spring cannot begin a Practicum until the following Spring.\u00a0 If they are conducting a Practicum in their home country and\/or another non-U.S. location, these restrictions do not apply.\u00a0 In either instance, students are encouraged to begin networking and exploring potential practicum opportunities in the Fall of their 1st semester.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>*Students often ask about securing UNPAID volunteer opportunities at nonprofit organizations in addition to their CPT.\u00a0 Please refer them to ISSO as these requests are determined on a case-by-case basis.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<h3>Practicum<\/h3>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Practicum Information &amp; Requirements<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>Students must complete 240 hours which may be completed in one or more semesters. Remote practicums are acceptable with sufficient team interaction.\u00a0 The Practicum must meet five <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/files\/2018\/11\/List-of-Foundational-and-Functional-Certificate-Competencies_NOV2018.pdf\">learning competencies<\/a> \u00a0and produce two tangible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/files\/2017\/07\/Sample-Practicum-Deliverables_2018.pdf\">work products<\/a> (deliverables). Students must submit a Practicum Proposal in our <a href=\"https:\/\/sphpracticum.bumc.bu.edu\/\">Practicum Portal<\/a> for approval. International students must also register with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/isso\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BU International Students &amp; Scholars Office<\/a>.\u00a0 For more details on specific requirements and the registration process, please visit our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/careers\/for-students\/practmenu\/pract-requirements\/\">Practicum Requirements Page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>NOTE:\u00a0 New CEPH guidelines are in place for faculty hosting practicum students. These practicums must now involve external stakeholders. However, these students have only completed their core courses at this point, and do not have certificate courses to put into practice.
