The BUSPH Education Committee is honoring the achievements of 11 faculty who received an Award for Excellence in Teaching for Fall 2012.<\/p>\n

\"block1.jpg\"Fall 2012 Teaching Award winners<\/span><\/span>Recipients are selected by the Teaching Awards Selection Sub-Committee which is comprised of faculty from each department. The Sub-Committee’s selection is based on a review of the overall course evaluations, including instructor ratings and student comments. Included below are comments from student evaluations of the courses.<\/p>\n

Our students were very satisfied with their experiences in the classroom this fall. They are appreciative of faculty efforts to incorporate different techniques to promote learning, to include timely topics, to engage them in exciting discussions, and to provide them with opportunities to learn and master important skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Comment: “Professor van Seventer is an exceptional teacher. She understands her material extremely well. She used different teaching methods to make things more comprehensible and understandable for us.”<\/p>\n

Comment: “The course had a very clear set of goals, and they were consistently reinforced and incorporated into one another. There were multiple forms of delivery for the same material each week, through Jacey’s PowerPoints and lectures, the textbook reading, and the online learning modules. Each option reinforced the others, and provided for a great overall understanding of the concepts each week. Jacey’s enthusiasm, supportive nature, and ability to accept and apply suggestions for improvements as the course progressed, helped me to do very well in this class.”<\/p>\n

Comment: “Dr. Horsburgh clearly knows a lot about HIV, and does a great job explaining complex concepts. He responded to questions with enthusiasm and was helpful and accessible.”<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Comment: “Matt is an excellent educator. He clearly has a passion for what he teaches and his enthusiasm shows during lecture. He is teaching us some really tough concepts, but he finds a way to make the material interesting and communicates clearly. It is challenging to hold someone’s attention in the 6-9 pm time slot, but Matt managed to keep me engaged every single class.”<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Comment: “The course did a great job of applying financial management to scenarios in which we may work as public health professionals. The homework was very relevant to the course and to our likely career paths. Taryn is approachable and willing to help, explains things clearly, and shares hilarious anecdotes from her work abroad in a way that adds to the lesson.”<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Comment: “I gained some really valuable skills in this course, including designing a workshop and developing a grant proposal. I really liked the practical, hands on approach and enjoyed learning the skills of organizing and leading training workshops<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

PH510: Introduction to Public Health<\/p>\n

Comment: “This course could have been about anything and Sophie would have made it worthwhile. Sophie facilitates an immersive, dynamic classroom environment. She was a truly caring and engaging professor, and I loved this class. The course moved at a really comfortable pace that managed to be fresh and engaging, without being overwhelming. It covered a huge breadth of material and I left the class excited about the topic and often spent time on my own learning more.”<\/p>\n

Comment: “In response to the question about advice you’d give to another student interested in the course: TAKE IT. It’s awesome.”<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Comment: “Vicky’s comments on the assignments were very useful as they enabled the students to make sure that they were using the tools correctly and how they could use the tools in other situations. Since the weekly assignments were not graded, this permitted me to experiment with the assignments in situations I would not have normally presented since they were ‘tricky’ situations. I plan to use these skills for years to come.”<\/p>\n
