The BUSPH Education Committee is honoring the achievements of 12 faculty who received an Award for Excellence in Teaching for Spring 2012.<\/p>\n

Recipients are selected by the Teaching Awards Selection Sub-Committee which is comprised of faculty from each department. The Sub-Committee’s selection is based on a review of the overall course evaluations, including instructor ratings and student comments.\u00a0Included below are comments from student evaluations of the courses.<\/p>\n

Once again, our students are very satisfied with their experiences in the classroom. They are appreciative of faculty efforts to incorporate different techniques to promote learning, to include timely topics, to engage them in exciting discussions, and to provide them with opportunities to learn and master important skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Comment: “Very well-prepared instructor, who was very open to explaining subjects outside of class as well.”<\/p>\n

Comment: “Lectures explained why and how we used various methods, and then provided examples along with SAS code. The notes were incredibly comprehensive and will serve as an excellent resource in the future.”<\/p>\n

Comment: “Strengths of this course were the real-life assignments, working with the MBTA and local community groups. Getting that sort of experience working with different people is invaluable, I believe, because it’s so true to what you may be doing later in life.”<\/p>\n

Comment: “Jon’s feedback on written assignments and presentations was incredibly thorough and very prompt. I’ve never had a professor respond as thoroughly as he does.”<\/p>\n

Comment: “Probably the one of the best professors I had at BUSPH. Very smart, good at setting up class discussion on topics. More classes should be structured like hers. I learned a lot in just half a semester.”<\/p>\n

There was a good distribution of homework assignments and workshops and the workshop exercises are a lot of fun. Comment: “Rich Feeley was an excellent instructor. The course is intense and extremely difficult, especially for those new to public health and consulting. Rich was always open to answering any questions, and no question was silly.”<\/p>\n

Comment: “A real strength of this course was having Rich Feeley as the instructor. He was able to provide the “ins and outs” of consulting and brought the personal experiences and stories to drive home concepts.”<\/p>\n

Comment: “Taryn is obviously committed to fighting corruption as shown in her vast experiences. This is what made her teaching the course so beneficial for me as a student to see real passion. It excites me to try to find my own niche!”<\/p>\n

Comment: “Professor Lagasse demonstrated considerable patience with the difference in students’ abilities to grasp the material. He was very approachable.”<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Each semester, the school’s teaching awards acknowledge the fine work of instructors of individual courses. But the Teaching Awards Committee encountered a special case as it considered Spring 2012 courses. The six sections of BS723 Introduction to Statistical Computing in Spring 2012 had an overall mean student evaluation of 4.5. Because the ratings for the individual sections were almost uniformly high, it was difficult to single out a particular instructor for an award.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Therefore, the Committee would like to congratulate and recognize the Biostatistics Department faculty who taught, developed, and coordinated both the six sections of BS723 Introduction to Statistical Computing in Spring 2012, and the syllabus, readings, and exercises they shared:<\/p>\n
