\"SPHDEAN\"The American Journal of Epidemiology<\/em> (AJE<\/em>)<\/a>\u00a0has\u00a0named an article co-authored by Dean Sandro Galea<\/a>\u00a0one of its 2015 \u201cArticles of the Year<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFormalizing the Role of Agent-Based Modeling in Causal Inference and Epidemiology<\/a>\u201d was nominated by AJE<\/em> readers and editors as one of the top 10 articles representing \u201cthe very best of AJE<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

The titles of the 10 articles\u00a0were published in the April 15 issue of the AJE<\/em>, and award winners were recognized during the 2016 Society for Epidemiologic Research (SER) meeting in Miami on June 24, which coincided with the\u00a0Epidemiology Congress of the Americas.<\/p>\n

Dean Galea co-authored the article with Brandon D. L. Marshall, assistant professor of epidemiology at Brown University School of Public Health. Galea and Marshall showed how agent-based models, which simulate the actions and interactions of autonomous \u201cagents\u201d to assess their effects on a system as a whole, \u201ccan be used to simulate counterfactual outcomes in the presence of complexity.\u201d The authors call this \u201ca promising novel approach to identify and evaluate complex causal effects,\u201d illuminating new areas for intervention.<\/p>\n

An article co-authored by Dean Galea was also selected as an AJE 2014 Article of the Year. Research led by Lauren Wise<\/a>, professor of epidemiology, was honored as a 2013 Article of the Year, one of the first 10 articles to receive the award.<\/p>\n

Matthew Fox<\/a>, associate professor of epidemiology, was also honored as an AJE <\/em>Reviewer of the Year during the Epidemiology Congress of the Americas.<\/p>\n
