{"id":76603,"date":"2015-12-09T10:35:58","date_gmt":"2015-12-09T15:35:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/?p=76603"},"modified":"2020-09-17T10:28:26","modified_gmt":"2020-09-17T14:28:26","slug":"journalists-visit-poverty-class","status":"publish","type":"bu-article","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/news\/articles\/2015\/journalists-visit-poverty-class\/","title":{"rendered":"Journalists Visit Poverty Class"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-prepress-component-metabar sphnews-prepress-layout-metabar\">\n\t<div class=\"wp-prepress-component-metabar-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-prepress-component-metabar-date\">December 9, 2015<\/div>\n\t\t\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"wp-prepress-component-metabar-credits\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"wp-prepress-component-metabar-share js-bu-prepress-share-tools\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"icon-twitter\"><span>Twitter<\/span><\/span>\n\t\t\t<span class=\"icon-facebook\"><span>Facebook<\/span><\/span>\n\t\t\t<span class=\"icon-action\"><\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<figure id=\"attachment_76606\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-76606\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/sph\/files\/2015\/12\/GlobeVisitsPovertyClass.jpg\" alt=\"Sophie Godley (right) introduces Jessica Rinaldi (left) and Sarah Schweitzer.\" class=\"size-full wp-image-76606\" height=\"241\" width=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-76606\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sophie Godley (right) introduces Jessica Rinaldi (left) and Sarah Schweitzer.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>Boston Globe<\/em> reporter Sarah Schweitzer and photographer Jessica Rinaldi visited the class Seeing Poverty: Understanding and Addressing Poverty in America on December 1.<\/p>\n<p>To <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/profile\/sophie-godley\/\">Sophie Godley<\/a>, clinical assistant professor and director of undergraduate programs in Community Health Sciences, it was as if they had been there all along.<\/p>\n<p>When she read their recent long-form piece, \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/apps.bostonglobe.com\/graphics\/2015\/11\/strider\/?p1=BGMenu_Article\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Life and Times of Strider Wolf<\/a>,\u201d Godley says, \u201cit felt like they had been sitting in our class for the last two months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Globe<\/em> piece shows a few months in the life of Strider Wolf Grant, a little boy living in extreme poverty in Maine with his grandparents and younger brother, and the effects of the abuse, scarcity, and uncertainty he has faced.<\/p>\n<p>Godley immediately reached out to Schweitzer and Rinaldi, and soon they agreed to come speak to Godley\u2019s students.<\/p>\n<p>Seeing Poverty, taught by Godley at BU\u2019s Kilachand Honors College, explores issues in American poverty through multiple disciplines and approaches.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe combination of photojournalism and narrative was exciting,\u201d Godley explains, \u201cbecause our class has spent a lot of time thinking about imagery in terms of poverty and how the poor are depicted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After a brief introduction\u2014in which Schweitzer and Rinaldi joked about public speaking being a departure from their usual fly-on-the-wall approach\u2014the reporters answered student questions about telling stories about poverty from a place of privilege.<\/p>\n<p>One student asked about being \u201clet in\u201d to the family\u2019s life to create such an intimate portrayal of incredible hardship.<\/p>\n<p>By way of an answer, Rinaldi described her first meeting with the family: She arrived almost immediately after the Grants were informed of their eviction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said, &#8216;I understand if you don\u2019t want me to shoot anything,\u2019&#8221; Rinaldi recalled. Strider\u2019s grandmother replied, &#8220;\u2018You shoot anything you need to.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rinaldi said that was the moment of permission: \u201cIt\u2019s okay for you to be here. It\u2019s okay for you to see this.
