In honor of these milestones, PHP plans to expand the 2027-2028 fellowship class to include up to seven students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are thrilled to be able to offer this experience to more students than ever before,&#8221; says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/profile\/mallory-bersi\/\">Mallory Bersi<\/a> (SPH\u201819), PHP&#8217;s managing editor. \u201cWe\u2019ve seen a lot of interest in the fellowship in years past, so we want to build on that momentum and welcome more voices and perspectives into the next cohort. We\u2019re at a time in public health where collaborating and sharing diverse ideas are essential to moving the field forward.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Produced by the School but editorially independent, PHP is a unique online population health magazine with two complementary aims: to surface critical intersections in public health and social justice across the United States and to train the next generation to be effective public health communicators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignwide is-style-default\" style=\"border-color:#9b51e0\"><blockquote><p>&#8220;We are here to uplift the stories of public health and to remind readers that social conditions matter. Health is individual, but it is also communal\u2014we are connected to other people in buses and planes, at work, in school, and through the air we breathe.&#8221;<\/p><cite>Michael Stein, PHP executive editor and chair and professor of health law, policy &amp; management<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The selective, year-long PHP fellowship empowers on-campus MPH students to bring their individual passions to the national conversation on public health. Writing fellows shepherd dozens of pieces each from pitch to publication\u2014explaining the latest health <a href=\"https:\/\/publichealthpost.org\/tag\/research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research<\/a>, interrogating striking <a href=\"https:\/\/publichealthpost.org\/tag\/databyte\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">data visualizations<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/publichealthpost.org\/tag\/profile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">profiling<\/a> influential leaders and changemakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fellowship\u2019s curriculum blends craft and community through weekly writing workshops and editorial meetings. Under the mentorship of SPH faculty and staff\u2014including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/profile\/michael-stein\/\">Michael Stein<\/a>, executive editor and chair and professor of health law, policy &amp; management;&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/profile\/jennifer-beard\/\">Jennifer Beard<\/a>, senior editor and clinical professor of global health; and&nbsp;Bersi\u2014students translate dense academic jargon into accessible, engaging narratives that can deepen public understanding of complex challenges and raise awareness of underreported, evidence-based solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPublic health is a brand that needs help,\u201d says Stein, author of several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michaelsteinbooks.org\/books\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">public health books<\/a> considered \u201crequired reading\u201d by health leaders nationwide. \u201cWe are here to uplift the stories of public health and to remind readers that social conditions matter. Health is individual, but it is also communal\u2014we are connected to other people in buses and planes, at work, in school, and through the air we breathe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Five days a week, the student <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publichealthpost.org\/fellowship\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">writing fellows<\/a> and a variety of expert <a href=\"https:\/\/publichealthpost.org\/editorial-process\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">guest authors<\/a> publish articles to <a href=\"http:\/\/publichealthpost.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">publichealthpost.org<\/a>, covering scientific advances, policy developments, and other newsworthy topics in clear, engaging language aimed at everyone from other students and practitioners in the field to journalists, policymakers, and the wider public. Their stories fall into several broad categories\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/publichealthpost.org\/mental-behavioral-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mental and behavioral health<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/publichealthpost.org\/health-equity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">health equity<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/publichealthpost.org\/environment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">environment<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/publichealthpost.org\/sexual-reproductive-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sexual and reproductive health<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/publichealthpost.org\/disease\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">disease<\/a>\u2014 but cover a myriad of distinct subjects from <a href=\"https:\/\/publichealthpost.org\/mental-behavioral-health\/ai-generated-depression\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AI-generated depression<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/publichealthpost.org\/environment\/bitcoins-toxic-footprint\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bitcoin\u2019s toxic footprint<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Nurturing a robust community of writers at SPH is a key component of the School\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/education\/public-health-writing\/\">Public Health Writing Program<\/a>, and PHP is a major part of that,&#8221; says Beard. &#8220;We hope that the expansion of the program allows more students to dive into the writing process and refine their public health communication skills.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since its founding in 2016, PHP has supported over 40 student fellows and more than 900 guest contributors. Each cohort expands the publication\u2019s reach: once a week, PHP\u2019s newsletter is sent to more than 13,000 subscribers across all 50 states and more than 100 countries. With the help of a student fellow specializing in multimedia production\u2014a new track introduced in 2024\u2014PHP reaches tens of thousands more on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/pubhealthpost\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Instagram<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@pubhealthpost\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TikTok<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/showcase\/public-health-post\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are particularly excited that PHP&#8217;s upcoming expansion will allow the publication to further embrace multimedia production, since we know people are increasingly turning to social media to get their health information,&#8221; says Bersi. An additional one to two fellows in the 2027\u20142028 cohort will focus on creating multimedia content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><meta charset=\"utf-8\">&#8220;We also hope that by adjusting the weekly commitment from 15 hours per week to 10 hours per week, the students who participate will retain the bandwidth to engage in research opportunities and extracurricular activities on and off campus as they wish,&#8221; says Bersi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The impact of students who accept PHP fellowships goes beyond readership and views during their year in the program.
