Non-profits and local government agencies have long entrusted practicum students to spearhead important work but unfortunately, for the same reasons these agencies need the students, they often cannot afford to pay them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/admissions\/tuition-and-funding\/generation-health\/\">Generation Health<\/a>, an initiative launched in 2022 by former Dean <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/news\/articles\/2024\/dean-sandro-galea-leaving-school-of-public-health-for-washu-opportunity\/\">Sandro Galea<\/a>, was endowed with a $1 million investment courtesy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/give\/\">SPH\u2019s alumni and friends<\/a> to ensure that every student would have the financial security to pursue the practicum of their choice. The funds covered her travel and expenses abroad, she says, enabling her to expand her professional network globally and apply skills she had only ever practiced in the classroom in a real-life setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI would not have been able to have such a transformative experience without it,\u201d says Mohamed, who used the programming language R to conduct statistical analyses of MDH\u2019s readily available data on HIV, later distilling her findings into concise presentations with recommendations to MDH for potential interventions. \u201cI strengthened my research and professional skills internationally, and I am beyond grateful for the opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mohamed is one of more than 200 students to have benefited from Generation Health funding over the past two years. When the program began, more than half of practica were unpaid. Today, over 70% of SPH students are compensated for their work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michelle Veras, an MPH student studying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/education\/degrees-and-programs\/master-of-public-health-programs\/certificates\/mph-functional-certificates\/program-management\/\">program management<\/a>, completed her practicum with the support of Generation Health at <a href=\"https:\/\/neighborhealth.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NeighborHealth<\/a> (formerly East Boston Neighborhood Health), the largest community-based primary care health system in Massachusetts. As a food access program intern, Veras contributed to the operations of a variety of local initiatives including the East Boston Farmers\u2019 Market, a community garden, and the Kids Activity and Nutrition Department at East Boston NeighborHealth. When she graduates this spring, Veras aspires to continue her food justice work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI had a very positive and enriching practicum experience,\u201d Veras says. \u201cReceiving the Generation Health funding allowed me to stop worrying about my finances and truly focus on thriving in my practicum.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"\/sph\/files\/2025\/04\/Michelle-Veras-farmers-market-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Michelle Veras with colleagues from NeighborHealth after one of their summer famers markets. Overall,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.naceweb.org\/diversity-equity-and-inclusion\/trends-and-predictions\/the-class-of-2023-inequity-continues-to-underpin-internship-participation-and-pay-status\/\" target=\"_blank\">just under 60%<\/a> of&nbsp;higher education internships are paid nationwide, but the data also points to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naceweb.org\/diversity-equity-and-inclusion\/trends-and-predictions\/the-class-of-2023-inequity-continues-to-underpin-internship-participation-and-pay-status\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">systemic inequities<\/a> in who gets a paid position. A smaller proportion of all internships taken by women were paid compared to men, for example, and the same goes for first-generation interns versus interns whose parents also held internships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStudent empowerment is important as ever. I feel so proud that SPH recognizes that graduate students need and deserve support to be empowered to tackle some of society\u2019s greatest public health challenges,\u201d says Wisniewski. \u201cGeneration Health has been a blessing\u2014watching students take on critical projects in organizations with limited funding and make significant impacts in important public health areas is inspiring. These funds have enabled many opportunities that would otherwise not be possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In light of the program\u2019s success, SPH extended Generation Health beyond its initial two-year pilot into 2025 but demand exceeds the available funds. To help close the gap, the school is inviting donations on <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/give.bu.edu\/schools\/BostonUniversity\/giving-day\/pages\/school-of-public-health\" target=\"_blank\">Giving Day<\/a> April 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mohamed recently contacted Wisnieski to share an unfortunate update about MDH. She has followed their work since completing her practicum and learned that MDH is now in danger of shutting down due to a loss of USAID funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;While my hope and dream is to go back to Tanzania&nbsp;one day and continue the work that was catalyzed by the Generation Health funding, [that] may be on pause for the foreseeable future,\u201d wrote Mohamed. Regarding SPH\u2019s initiative to fund student practicums, she says, \u201cIt is so important, and I hope it continues.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider supporting SPH\u2019s Generation Health to allow
