Using his other hand, he balances a white box about the size of a small toaster against the crook of a tree branch. He secures the box to the tree with a few zip ties and then steps down to ensure that it is just out of reach of the ground, but the QR code printed on its bottom is still readable to passersby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past few weeks, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/urban\/profile\/jonathan-y-lee\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lee<\/a>, an environmental health PhD student in Boston University\u2019s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/urban\/\" target=\"_blank\">Urban Biogeoscience and Environmental Health (URBAN)<\/a> program, and Saba, a biomedical engineering undergraduate at BU, have crisscrossed the city deploying these white boxes in various Boston neighborhoods. The installation effort is part of a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abettercity.org\/our-work\/focus-areas\/environment-and-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\">year-long initiative<\/a> by the School of Public Health, in collaboration with <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">City of Boston\u2019s<\/a> <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.gov\/departments\/environment\" target=\"_blank\">Environment Department<\/a> and local nonprofits <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abettercity.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">A Better City<\/a> (ABC) and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tbf.org\/?gad_source=1&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwvb-zBhCmARIsAAfUI2sHMYajB4u4Eo4_QShc130FhLFikjLlC-LGMxiCCoSOpHxcOgaNx4UaAquwEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\">The Boston Foundation<\/a> (TBF), to pilot a more equitable mechanism of declaring heat emergencies. Photo: Megan Jones<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHeat is increasing in intensity and frequency across the globe due to climate change, and every day more connections are made between extreme heat and adverse health, including mental health,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/profile\/m-fabian\/\">Patricia Fabian<\/a>, associate professor of environmental health at SPH, associate director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/igs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BU Institute for Global Sustainability<\/a>, and one of the pilot project leads. \u201cExtreme heat impacts everyone, but particularly vulnerable groups like babies, pregnant people, older adults, and people on certain medications. Having accurate information about temperatures in local heat islands will help cities prepare for extreme heat events and protect those most vulnerable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/heatislands\" target=\"_blank\">heat island effect<\/a> explains why some parts of the city heat up more than others when summer temperatures soar. While parks and other areas with green space and greater tree cover provide shade, and cool the air through evaporation and transpiration, the dark roofs and asphalt of densely developed areas absorb and radiate the sun\u2019s heat. For example, through another research project called <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.c-heatproject.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">C-HEAT<\/a>, Fabian and her colleagues have recorded up to a 7-degree difference between hotter and cooler city blocks in Chelsea and East Boston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea for this summer\u2019s temperature pilot took shape during a recent <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/greenribboncommission.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Boston Green Ribbon Commission<\/a> meeting hosted by TBF that Fabian attended alongside <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abettercity.org\/about-us\/staff\/isabella-m.-gambill\" target=\"_blank\">Isabella Gambill<\/a>, assistant director of climate, energy, and resilience at ABC, and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.gov\/departments\/environment\/zoe-davis\" target=\"_blank\">Zoe Davis<\/a>, climate resilience project manager on the Climate Ready Boston Team in the City of Boston\u2019s Environment Department. Following the meeting, where Fabian presented of work from the C-HEAT study, she discussed with Gambill and Davis the value of monitoring temperatures in specific Boston neighborhoods, particularly those identified as the hottest in the City\u2019s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.gov\/environment-and-energy\/heat-resilience-solutions-boston\" target=\"_blank\">Heat Resilience Plan<\/a>: Chinatown, Dorchester, East Boston, Mattapan, and Roxbury. The pair endorsed the idea, prompting the group to approach another attendee, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tbf.org\/who-we-are\/people\" target=\"_blank\">Julia Howard<\/a>, senior program officer for climate at TBF, to collaborate on a proposal for funding. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The funding, which the group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tbf.org\/blog\/2024\/june\/tbf-climate-change-space-health-equity-focus\">successfully secured through TBF<\/a>, supports ABC to engage local businesses as sensor hosts and SPH students to assemble and deploy the sensors, as well as to collect and analyze the data. Davis then leveraged connections in Boston\u2019s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.gov\/departments\/parks-and-recreation\" target=\"_blank\">Parks and Recreation<\/a> department to facilitate installation of the sensors in city trees. Photo: Megan Jones<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLots of connections and previous work came together for this pilot to be organized in record time,\u201d says Fabian, who has participated in an extreme heat working group convened by ABC and led by Gambill for the past four years. \u201cEvery stakeholder has aligned\u2014but slightly different\u2014goals, and we are working to meet everyone\u2019s priorities, whether that is temperature data, [community] engagement, or decision support.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, the National Weather Service (NWS) station at Logan Airport determines the official temperature reading for Boston. To declare a heat emergency, the NWS sensors must register a heat index (air temperature and relative humidity) of 95 degrees Fahrenheit for at least two consecutive days with nighttime temperatures 75 degrees or higher. With the help of students like Lee and Saba, Fabian and Gambill will deploy and monitor a total of 15 sensors throughout the city, gathering and analyzing data on hot spots to lay the foundation for a more equitable mechanism of declaring future heat emergencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lee, who installed similar sensors in Chelsea for C-HEAT, leveraged data on temperature, built infrastructure, and environmental justice to map potential sites for the pilot sensors. \u201c[The NWS] temperature monitor is used by the City of Boston to issue heat emergencies, but we hypothesize that sometimes inner-city areas can get considerably hotter,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/sph\/files\/2024\/06\/06122024-MJones-02-edited-1-1024x731.jpg\" alt=\"Jonathan Lee holds a heat sensor, showing the QR code on the bottom that passersby can scan for more information on the pilot project. How challenging are they to install? And what kinds of resources are needed to process and share the data? Ultimately, they aim to launch a semi-permanent sensor network with the City of Boston and make neighborhood temperature data publicly accessible online via a platform similar to the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/bostonschoolsiaq.terrabase.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Boston Public Schools\u2019 dashboard<\/a> for monitoring indoor air quality in classrooms, a project Fabian has also been involved in developing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sensors could not only prove useful in protecting public health during future heat waves, says Fabian. \u201c[They are] also an opportunity to engage residents\u2014particularly residents of communities on the frontlines of climate change\u2014in long-term climate resilience solutions such weatherization, assistance programs, and clean technology, such as heat pumps and solar panels.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>In October 2023, Fabian spoke about extreme heat and health at greater length on <\/em>The Lancet Voice <em>podcast.
