This weekly series spotlights one SPH staff member who advances public health through collaborations within the field and across sectors.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/sph\/files\/2020\/07\/michael-winter-400x241.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"241\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-169043 alignleft\" \/><strong>Can you talk about your main responsibilities as the director of biostatistics for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/busm\/research\/cores\/bedac\/\">BEDAC<\/a>?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My main responsibility for BEDAC is to provide leadership for the statistical programming team. This includes training programmers and analysts in best practices, developing BEDAC statistical standard operating procedures (SOPs), and overseeing progress of BEDAC projects that involve statistical programming. I also spend time developing and editing analytic plans for projects and mentoring programmers and practicum students.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\"><strong>Can you discuss how collaborative work is integral to your role, and what are one or two collaborations that have been most meaningful to you?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\">Pretty much everything I do at BEDAC involves collaboration, whether it\u2019s working with my team at BEDAC on projects, working with investigators on developing and implementing statistical analysis for their research, or working with (and learning from) faculty in the Biostatistics department.\u00a0My 25-year history of collaborating with BMC\u2019s General Internal Medicine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/care\/\">CARE Unit<\/a> on many different studies, including the current <a href=\"http:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/urbanarch\/\">URBAN ARCH Consortium<\/a>, has been very meaningful to me, both in terms of the challenging work and relevant and impactful subject matter.\u00a0Working with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/profile\/jeffrey-samet\/\">Jeffrey Samet<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/profile\/richard-saitz\/\">Richard Saitz<\/a>, along with Department of Biostatistics faculty <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/profile\/timothy-heeren\/\">Tim Heeren<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/profile\/debbie-cheng\/\">Debbie<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/2020\/06\/20\/faculty-spotlight-debbie-cheng\/\">Cheng<\/a>, and others, on these relevant public health projects has been very rewarding to me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\"><strong>What do you enjoy most about your work?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"font-style: inherit; font-weight: inherit;\">There are two aspects of my work that I enjoy most.\u00a0First, the variety and breadth of projects I have been privileged to work on over my 32-year career at BEDAC makes the job both challenging and interesting.\u00a0Sure, it\u2019s difficult to juggle priorities of several different projects at the same time but it also ensures that no two days are the same!\u00a0The second aspect\u2014probably the most important actually\u2014is that I get to work every day with some of the smartest, most talented, kindest, and fun people I\u2019ve known in my colleagues at BEDAC.\u00a0I am continually reminded how lucky I am to work with these folks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&#8220;<span>Michael is first and foremost a teacher and mentor, as well as an expert biostatistician and analyst.\u00a0 These combination of skills make him extremely approachable, easy to work with and there is a sense of ease and comfort knowing that the project and team he is working with is in good hands.
