This weekly series spotlights one SPH faculty member who advances public health through collaborations within the field and across sectors.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"\/sph\/files\/2020\/04\/Howard-Cabral-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/sph\/files\/2020\/04\/Howard-Cabral-1-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-profile-sm wp-image-164560 alignleft\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/files\/2020\/04\/Howard-Cabral-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/files\/2020\/04\/Howard-Cabral-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/files\/2020\/04\/Howard-Cabral-1-500x500.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/files\/2020\/04\/Howard-Cabral-1-550x550.jpg 550w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/files\/2020\/04\/Howard-Cabral-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/files\/2020\/04\/Howard-Cabral-1-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Can you explain your current research interests and projects?<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As a biostatistician, my interests are in the analysis of longitudinal and other correlated data and in clinical trials methods for behavioral and health services interventions.<\/p>\n<p>My most recent collaborative projects include studies on patient navigation to reduce disparities in breast cancer care (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/busm\/profile\/tracy-battaglia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tracy Battaglia<\/a> at BMC), mental health and substance use with focus on maternal depression (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/busm\/profile\/michael-silverstein\/\">Mike Silverstein<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/busm\/profile\/caroline-kistin\/\">Caroline Kistin<\/a> at BMC and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/profile\/emily-feinberg\/\">Emily Feinberg<\/a> at SPH), health services for people living with HIV (<a href=\"https:\/\/ciswh.org\/team-members\/serena-rajabiun\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Serena Rajabiun<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ssw\/profile\/thomas-byrne\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tom Byrne<\/a> from the School of Social Work), maternal and child health outcomes with focus on assisted reproductive technologies (colleagues at Dartmouth and Massachusetts Department of Public Health), the diagnosis and access to services for children with autism (Emily Feinberg from SPH and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/busm\/profile\/sarabeth-broder-fingert\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sarah Broder-Fingert<\/a> from BMC), the use of technology in genetic counseling (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/profile\/catharine-wang\/\">Catharine Wang<\/a> from SPH), advanced care planning in end-of-life care (<a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.bu.edu\/Michael.PaascheOrlow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Paasche-Orlow<\/a> from BMC), and the effects of different modalities of fluoride treatment on dental intervention in veterans (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/dental\/profile\/marianne-jurasic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marianne Jurasic<\/a> from the School of Dental Medicine).<\/p>\n<p>I am also the director of the biostatistics component of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ctsi\/\">BU Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute<\/a> where I work with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/profile\/janice-weinberg\/\">Janice Weinberg<\/a> from Biostatistics to support the development of innovative research at BU and BMC.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>How does collaborating across so many sectors enhance your work, or advance the mission of SPH?<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As a biostatistician, I work in teams with clinicians, study coordinators, data analysts and managers (with a special shout-out to my colleagues at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/busm\/research\/cores\/bedac\/\">BEDAC<\/a>: Clara Chen, Mike Winter, Karen Fortu, Emily Sisson, Greg Patts, Marisa Massaro, Joe Palmisano, and Susan Gomes, who are key members on almost all of my projects!).<\/p>\n<p>I enjoy working with everyone on these projects. All are colleagues who are dedicated to doing work of the highest quality to improve health, \u201cdoing well to do good,\u201d as I like to tell my students. Most importantly, they are great people. They make our work together a pleasure and a privilege for me.\u00a0 We are changing the world with our work.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span>&#8220;Professor Cabral is a sought-after collaborator, working with interdisciplinary teams on a broad range of projects. Professor Cabral really shines when working with junior colleagues and students, putting his excellent mentoring skills to good use.
