Global Lawyers and Physicians at BUSPH’s Department of Health Law, Bioethics & Human Rights, and The Constitution Project, co-sponsored the Medical Care and Medical Ethics at Guantanamo Conference at The National Academy of Science in Washington DC on December 2, 2013.

One hundred sixty four detainees remain at the Guantánamo detention facility. It is an aging population whose medical issues are increasing in scope and complexity, said department Chair George Annas, who was instrumental in creating and organizing the event.

The conference identified, analyzed, and proposed solutions to structural and other obstacles that impede physicians’ ability to deliver to Guantanamo detainees quality ethical medical care that meets professional standards.
