Dear Colleagues,

We hope that everyone is doing well as the semester draws to a close.

Teaching is a core principle of BUSPH and is a vital pillar of the school’s 10-point plan for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice. We strive to provide training and professional development opportunities for instructors on understanding matters of DEIJ as well as how to navigate classroom conversations. To this end, we are pleased to announce we will offer, for the second year, an opportunity that has emerged to advance inclusive teaching.

The Inclusive STEM Teaching Project is an online edX course intended to teach and refine skills in inclusive instruction. All faculty are invited to participate in the project. The course consists of five self-paced modules plus an introduction and is typically completed within six weeks. Although the course title includes “STEM,” the topics, materials, examples, and competencies covered are broadly applicable and are highly relevant to all BUSPH faculty.

The course has both synchronous and asynchronous components and will cover the following topics: social identity and its impact on learning; power, positionality, and privilege; inclusive course design; interruption of oppression and microaggressions; and evidence-based teaching.  Course material includes text, videos (short lectures and role-played scenarios), and self-reflection exercises.

The Inclusive STEM Teaching Project course will become available to BUSPH faculty on May 16th, with new material, to be completed asynchronously, released weekly.  Weekly moderated discussions with peers from BUSPH will provide in-depth learning and skills development. The discussions will be held via Zoom on Tuesdays from 3:30 – 5:00pm starting May 23. The expected total time commitment is approximately four hours per week for six weeks (ending June 27).

The course is open to all SPH instructors. Participants in the 2022 offering found the course and discussion sessions to be “very useful,” “a valuable learning experience,” and indicated they would “make changes in my own teaching this coming academic year” based on the material covered.

To participate please complete this form by May 12. Space is limited. If you have additional questions please contact Anita DeStefano (adestef@bu.edu).
