Dear SPH Community:

Bias Training

Keeping with our goal to create a culture of inclusion, where all members of our community feel valued and respected, and where we can have conversations about challenging issues around diversity in safe spaces, we will be offering formal bias training for faculty and staff. Four sessions are being offered throughout the fall as follows:

  • Monday, October 3, 2016, 1 – 3 p.m., Hiebert Lounge (SESSION FULL)
  • Thursday, October 20, 2016, 8:30 – 10:50 a.m., Hiebert Lounge
  • Wednesday November 2, 2016, 3–5 p.m., Crosstown room TBA
  • Monday November 14, 2016, 3–5 p.m., Hiebert Lounge

Each session will accommodate 45–50 people. Individuals need only sign up for a single session. All faculty and staff are strongly encouraged to sign up for one of these sessions. RSVP here.

SPH Reads

This year we are pleased to announce a new initiative at the School of Public Health called, “SPH Reads,” a community-wide reading program hosted by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. It aims to encourage critical thought and discussion among all members of the SPH community, and is centered on a carefully chosen, thought-provoking book. This year’s selection is “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot.

All incoming (first-year) MPH students and core-course faculty are encouraged to read the selected book and have been provided with copies. Returning students, non-core curriculum faculty, and staff are encouraged to read the book. Throughout the year, beginning with Orientation, there will be opportunities to gather and talk about the issues presented in the book through lectures, seminars, and small discussion groups involving all members of the SPH community. The book is available in the following places:

  • Your local library
  • Amazon and other book retailers
  • Copies in the Alumni Medical Library
  • E-copies available after Labor Day
