Impact of CMS Public Reports of Hospital Charge Data.
Since 2013, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has been publicizing charges for services provided in approximately 3,400 U.S. hospitals. Increasing transparency, it is hoped, will bring greater market forces to bear on the steep growth in hospital prices. The online data release has revealed dramatic differences in charges for the same procedures nationally, regionally, and sometimes locally. Is this information serving its intended purpose? Who are the receptive audiences? This research is exploring impacts of CMS public reports on the market for hospital inpatient services by examining shifts in charges and in hospital market shares over time.
