Project 1 Links PCE Exposure and Vision Effects

Dr. Ann Aschengrau and the research team of Project 1 have found an association between pre-natal and early life exposures to PCE in drinking water and vision impairments later in life.  While PCE exposure in occupational settings has been linked to deficiencies with color discrimination in previous research, this is the first study to look at the impact of early life exposure to PCE on adult vision.  The study used vision tests to assess acuity, contrast sensitivity and color discrimination in a cohort of adults from Cape Cod who were exposed to PCE in utero and/or early childhood between 1969 and 1983 when drinking water pipes contained a vinyl liner of PCE.

Their study was recently published in Environmental Health Perspectives and covered in the Boston University Daily Insider.
