A South Boston Restaurant Served a ‘Hangover Brunch’ With a Side of IV Drips

Welcome back to AM Intel, a Monday morning round-up of mini news bites to kick off the week.

Eggs and a Side of Saline, Please

Coppersmith — which was recently granted a reprieve on its closing timeline and will now close in late 2020 instead of January 2020 — hosted a bit of a unique “hangover brunch” on New Year’s Day, teaming up with South Boston company IV League to offer a variety of IV treatments onsite to hungover brunchers, claiming to help them feel better with various combinations of saline, a “multivitamin cocktail,” and anti-nausea medication. This is the second year Coppersmith and IV League have teamed up for an event. Nothing says festive like shakshuka with a saline bag.

As Boston.com noted after chatting with a local primary care physician and general internist, Dr. Richard Saitz, there are some small risks involved with IV treatments — clotting, infections — and Saitz would only recommend IV treatment of a hangover (in a medical setting, not in a restaurant) if the person were “sick enough...throwing up so much that they’re volume depleted.”

...in which case they hopefully wouldn’t be out at a restaurant trying to drink bloody marys, anyway.

An East Somerville Brazilian Restaurant Is Bigger, Better, and Boozier

Casual Brazilian joint Gauchão Brazilian Cuisine, located at 102 Broadway in East Somerville, has expanded and majorly upgraded its space, adding more seating, table service, all-you-can-eat grilled meats carved tableside, and a full bar, featuring cocktails like caipirinhas. The restaurant is also keeping its always-popular pay-by-weight buffet of meats and more.

Sad News from D.C.

D.C.-area chef Bob Kinkead has died at 67 following a long battle with heart disease and diabetes. The Providence, Rhode Island, native grew up in Massachusetts and operated Boston restaurant Sibling Rivalry with his brother David; it was open for a nearly a decade in the South End, closing in 2013. (The space is now home to Barcelona Wine Bar.)

While most of his work was in the D.C. area over the years, Kinkead also spent time at Harvard Square’s Harvest in the early 1980s and spent the mid 1980s as executive chef and partner of 21 Federal on Nantucket, and New England seafood influences could be found on his D.C. menus.
