His work centers on how people form their beliefs about inequality and what leads them to change their views. It builds on a broad methodological repertoire, ranging from qualitative field work to longitudinal data analysis, computational sociology, original surveys, and experiments.<\/p>\n<p>He has published 35 peer-reviewed articles in leading journals such as <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/sf\/soae033\">Social Forces<\/a><em>, <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/socpro\/spaa059\">Social Problems<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/ser\/advance-article\/doi\/10.1093\/ser\/mwy051\/5299221?guestAccessKey=3434491f-1ace-4dee-b24d-120dd166fdd2\">Socio-Economic Review<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1146\/annurev.soc.012809.102538\">Annual Review of Sociology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Mijs\u2019s scholarship is supported by over $2M in external funding from national and international organizations such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wealthtalks.org\/\">Volkswagen Foundation<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jonathanmijs.com\/unequality\">European Commission<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jonathanmijs.com\/disconnected\">Dutch Research Council<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He is the recipient of the International Society for Justice Research <a href=\"https:\/\/www.isjr.org\/deutsch\">Morton Deutsch Award<\/a>, International Sociological Association <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/rc28hp\/travel-awards\/recipients\">Alan C. Kerckhoff Award<\/a>, and Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences <a href=\"https:\/\/www.knaw.nl\/en\/funds-and-prizes\/knaw-early-career-award\">Early Career Award<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>His\u00a0work has been featured in media outlets in half a dozen countries, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2019\/jan\/24\/right-tricked-rampant-inequality-lse-meritocracy-myth\">The Guardian<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2019\/02\/26\/ivanka-trump-comes-out-against-all-guaranteed-jobs-except-her-own\/?noredirect=on\">The Washington Post<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/elpais.com\/ciencia\/2021-02-12\/la-meritocracia-y-otros-mecanismos-psicologicos-que-sirven-de-excusa-contra-los-impuestos.html\">El Pa\u00eds<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/valor.globo.com\/mundo\/noticia\/2020\/04\/29\/pandemia-e-crise-devem-elevar-desigualdade-global.ghtml\">Valor<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.volkskrant.nl\/columns-opinie\/nederlandse-leerling-is-niet-lui-maar-verstandig~bcb4792f\/\">De Volkskrant<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Mijs served as a subject matter expert for <a href=\"https:\/\/nextstrategy.amnesty.org\/2019\/05\/24\/inequality\/\">Amnesty International<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/en\/publications\/getting-the-public-on-side_262255fd-en.html\">Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development<\/a>, and the Governments of Canada and The Netherlands, and he was a technical consultant on the Hulu series <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.com\/video\/bee50c8b-03bb-4f7a-88e8-847ba3bcc853\">Paradise<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At BU, Dr Mijs teaches SO 391 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/cas\/courses\/cas-so-391\/\">Social Inequality in America<\/a>, SO 497 \/ SO 897 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/cas\/courses\/cas-so-497\/\">Understanding Meritocracy<\/a>, SO 201 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/cas\/courses\/cas-so-201\/\">Sociological Methods<\/a> and SO 702 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/grs\/courses\/cas-so-702\/\">Proseminar in Sociological Methods<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He is available to supervise dissertations and student research projects.
