{"id":10303,"date":"2020-07-24T15:47:38","date_gmt":"2020-07-24T19:47:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sociology\/?post_type=profile&#038;p=10303"},"modified":"2026-06-10T16:53:06","modified_gmt":"2026-06-10T20:53:06","slug":"liah-greenfeld","status":"publish","type":"profile","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sociology\/profile\/liah-greenfeld\/","title":{"rendered":"Liah Greenfeld"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span>Liah Greenfeld was Professor Emerita of Sociology, Political Science, and Anthropology at Boston University from 1994 until her recent retirement. <\/span>Called \u201cone of the most original thinkers of the current period\u201d and \u201cthe great historian of nationalism,\u201d Prof. Greenfeld was the author of<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>Mind, Modernity, Madness: The Impact of Culture on Human Experience<\/em><span>\u00a0<\/span>(Harvard University Press, 2013) and other books about modern society and culture, including the ground-breaking<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>Nationalism: Five Roads to Modernity<\/em><span>\u00a0<\/span>(Harvard University Press, 1992) and<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>The Spirit of Capitalism: Nationalism and Economic Growth<\/em><span>\u00a0<\/span>(Harvard University Press, 2001; Donald Kagan Best Book in European History Prize).<\/p>\n<p>Prof. Greenfeld held the positions of Assistant as well as John L. Loeb Associate Professor of Social Sciences at Harvard University between 1985 and 1994, and in 1994 joined Boston University as a University Professor and Professor of Political Science and Sociology. She also held visiting positions at RPI, MIT, the \u00c9cole des hautes \u00e9tudes en sciences sociales in Paris, and the Open University, Hong Kong.
