Sociology at BU<\/span><\/h1>\n

The Department of Sociology at Boston University fosters teaching and research that expands knowledge of human social behavior.\u00a0 A sociological lens is critical for understanding our increasingly diverse and complex society and its challenges, such as systemic racism, social and economic inequality, public health crises, and environmental injustice.<\/span><\/p>\n

As you learn the art and science of sociology, including its theories and methods, you will become active, critically informed, and globally aware citizens. These skills prepare students to become the next generation of teachers, policymakers, and scholars.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Program Learning Goals<\/span><\/h2>\n

Students who complete the major in sociology will achieve four distinct learning objectives:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. \u200b\u200b<\/span>master the<\/b> fundamental theoretical <\/b>approaches<\/span> and key disciplinary sociological concepts.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. understand sociological <\/span>methods of research design<\/b>, data gathering, and analysis.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. exhibit critical thinking skills<\/b> in evaluating sociological research, including the background assumptions, appropriateness of methods used, and strength of explanatory evidence. <\/span><\/li>\n
  4. write, speak, and communicate<\/b> using sociological knowledge<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
