{"id":129,"date":"2024-12-04T11:22:48","date_gmt":"2024-12-04T16:22:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/shs\/?page_id=129"},"modified":"2026-06-04T15:01:57","modified_gmt":"2026-06-04T19:01:57","slug":"enroll-waive-or-change-coverage","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/shs\/insurance\/enroll-waive-or-change-coverage\/","title":{"rendered":"Enroll, Waive, or Add Coverage"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Enroll in SHIP<\/h3>\n<p>BU automatically enrolls <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/shs\/insurance\/health-insurance-requirement-eligibility\/\">all students legally required to have health insurance<\/a> in the Aetna Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). If you are satisfied with this coverage, no further steps are necessary, and the SHIP premium will be billed to your student account.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You must take action by the Fall deadline (September 20) or Spring deadline (January 31) if you wish to:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Add dependent coverage<\/li>\n<li>Add dental insurance coverage<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The Fall deadline <\/b>applies to students who are<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/shs\/insurance\/eligibility-coverage-options\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> eligible<\/span><\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/shs\/health-requirements\/health-insurance-requirement-eligibility\/\">automatically enrolled<\/a> in Aetna SHIP during the fall semester.<\/p>\n<p><b>The Spring deadline<\/b> applies to students who are newly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/shs\/insurance\/eligibility-coverage-options\/\">eligible<\/a> or<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/shs\/health-requirements\/health-insurance-requirement-eligibility\/\"> automatically enrolled<\/a> for Aetna SHIP during the Spring semester. This includes students who were not registered for the Fall semester or who were ineligible for Aetna SHIP during the Fall semester.<\/p>\n<p>If you have not enrolled in SHIP before the deadline, you may still enroll if you experienced a &#8220;qualifying life event.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Qualifying Life Events<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>Qualifying life events include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Involuntary loss of comparable coverage under a partner&#8217;s or spouse&#8217;s healthcare plan<\/li>\n<li>Marriage or divorce<\/li>\n<li>Aging out of coverage provided by a parent\u2019s plan<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To request enrollment due to a qualifying life event, you will need to send a written request for insurance coverage (including documentation of your involuntary loss of health insurance) within 31 days from the date your previous coverage ended. The documentation must include the effective date the coverage ended. Typical documentation may include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A copy of the Certificate of Credible Coverage issued due to the insurance termination<\/li>\n<li>Confirmation of the insurance termination from the employer on company letterhead<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Send your request and supporting documentation by email (insmed@bu.edu) or fax to 617-353-3313. Requests may also be mailed to Boston University, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/studentaccountingservices\/\">Student Accounting Services<\/a>, 25 Buick Street, Suite 130, Boston, MA 02215.<br \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<h3>Waive SHIP<\/h3>\n<p>To waive SHIP coverage, you must be enrolled in a healthcare plan that meets comparable coverage requirements and is underwritten in the United States. Waivers must be submitted every year by the Fall deadline (September 20) or Spring deadline (January 31).<\/p>\n<p>We encourage students to consider their options before waiving SHIP. For many students, SHIP offers the most comprehensive coverage with the lowest out-of-pocket costs. Boston University has no financial stake in promoting this health insurance plan. Premiums are billed to your student account and paid directly to Aetna.<\/p>\n<p>Before waiving SHIP, use the checklist below to see whether your current healthcare plan meets all the requirements for comparable coverage. If your current plan doesn\u2019t meet the criteria, your request for a waiver will be declined.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><strong>Comparable Coverage Checklist<\/strong><\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>Your healthcare plan likely qualifies as comparable coverage if it meets <em>all of the following criteria<\/em>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>It meets the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthinsurance.org\/glossary\/aca-compliant-coverage\/\">requirements of the Affordable Care Act (ACA)<\/a><\/strong><br \/>\n<em>If the student is studying outside the United States, the requirement for an ACA-compliant plan is waived.<br style=\"clear: both;\" \/><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>It is &#8220;underwritten&#8221; in the United States<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Being \u201cbased in the United States\u201d is not equivalent and will not be accepted. If the student is studying outside the United States, the requirement for a plan underwritten in the United States is waived.<br style=\"clear: both;\" \/><br style=\"clear: both;\" \/><\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>It is NOT an &#8220;ISO&#8221; branded insurance product<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>These plans are aggressively marketed to college students as &#8220;comparable,&#8221; but when reviewed, often not compliant with state regulations.<br style=\"clear: both;\" \/><br style=\"clear: both;\" \/><\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>It offers an open network of providers in the Boston area<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Health plans with a closed network of providers and accessible only for emergency services (such as out-of-area HMOs, EPOs, or Medicaid products) are generally not accepted. If the student is studying outside the Boston area, substitute \u201cin the area where the student is studying\u201d for \u201cGreater Boston area\u201d.\u00a0<br style=\"clear: both;\" \/><br style=\"clear: both;\" \/><\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>It provides comprehensive coverage in the Greater Boston area, including all of the following:\u00a0<\/strong><br style=\"clear: both;\" \/><br style=\"clear: both;\" \/>\n<ul>\n<li>Unlimited lifetime dollar limit on coverage<\/li>\n<li>Preventive care without coinsurance<\/li>\n<li>Primary care services<\/li>\n<li>Emergency room care<\/li>\n<li>Surgery, in both inpatient and outpatient settings<\/li>\n<li>Hospital stays<\/li>\n<li>Outpatient medical visits (e.g., specialists)<\/li>\n<li>Outpatient mental or behavioral health visits (e.g., counseling or psychiatry visits, including those for substance use)<\/li>\n<li>Behavioral health hospitalizations<\/li>\n<li>Prescription drugs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In our experience, there are a number of student health plans that are not compliant with the comparable coverage requirements. The following list is not an exhaustive list, and students may have an insurance plan not included in the list, and still be ineligible to waive SHIP.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/shs\/non-compliant-student-health-insurance-plans\/\" class=\"button\">Review our list of some non-compliant plans<\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<h5>How to Waive SHIP<\/h5>\n<p>If your health insurance plan meets comparable coverage requirements, follow these steps to submit your waiver:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/mybu\/\">MyBU portal<\/a> and find your <strong>MyBU Dashboard<\/strong>, select <strong>Student Health Insurance<\/strong>, and then select <strong>Waive SHIP.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Once redirected to our partner&#8217;s website (Gallagher Student Health &amp; Special Risk), <strong>complete the waiver.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>&#8220;Save as draft&#8221;<\/strong> and submit your completed form. You&#8217;ll receive an email from Gallagher Student Health &amp; Special Risk confirming that the waiver has been submitted.\n<ul><\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>A waiver decision will be emailed to you in 1-2 business days.<\/li>\n<li>If your waiver is approved, the credit will be applied to your student account within 1-2 business days.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Add Dependent or Dental Coverage<\/h3>\n<p>You can add or change SHIP coverage any time before the Fall deadline (September 20) or Spring deadline (January 31). Dependent coverage can also be updated within 31 days of a qualifying life event.<\/p>\n<h5>Dependent Coverage<\/h5>\n<p>Eligible dependents include spouses and dependent children up to age 26.
