{"id":109,"date":"2024-12-04T11:16:50","date_gmt":"2024-12-04T16:16:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/shs\/?page_id=109"},"modified":"2026-05-21T08:53:15","modified_gmt":"2026-05-21T12:53:15","slug":"immunization-compliance","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/shs\/health-requirements\/immunization-compliance\/","title":{"rendered":"Immunization Compliance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Boston University policy and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/doc\/105-cmr-220-immunization-of-students-before-admission-to-school\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Massachusetts law<\/a> require that students have certain immunizations to protect the health of individuals and our community.<\/p>\n<h3>Required Student Populations<\/h3>\n<p>All full-time students and any international student studying on BU\u2019s campuses have required immunizations. In addition, some student populations have requirements beyond those listed below, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/shs\/health-requirements\/clinical-student-requirements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">clinical student health requirements<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/shs\/health-requirements\/student-athlete-requirements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">requirements for students participating in Varsity and Club Sports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Please submit your immunization documentation one month before the start of your first semester.<\/strong> Students who do not submit their documentation within 7 days of starting classes will have a compliance \u201chold\u201d placed on their account that prevents them from registering for classes.<\/p>\n<p>In the event of a campus disease outbreak, non-immunized students may be required to leave campus.<\/p>\n<h3>Required Immunizations<\/h3>\n<p>You must provide documentation of the following:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis (Tdap)<\/strong>. One dose of vaccine on or after age 10.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR).<\/strong> Two doses of vaccine or blood tests showing immunity. The first shot must be given after 12 months of age, with each vaccine given at least 4 weeks apart.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Varicella (Chickenpox)<\/strong>. Two doses of vaccine given at least 4 weeks apart <strong><em>or<\/em><\/strong> a blood test showing immunity <strong><em>or<\/em><\/strong> a date of disease certified by a healthcare provider. The first shot must be given after 12 months of age.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hepatitis B.<\/strong> Three doses of hepatitis B vaccine (or 2 doses of Heplisav)<strong><em> or<\/em><\/strong> a blood test showing immunity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Meningitis ACWY.<\/strong> One dose on or after your 16th birthday. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/shs\/health-requirements\/immunization-compliance\/meningitis-compliance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Learn more about this requirement<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Recommended Immunizations<\/h3>\n<p>The following vaccines are <em>not required<\/em>, but recommended for your health:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Flu vaccine<\/strong> for the current influenza season<\/li>\n<li><strong>COVID-19 vaccine<\/strong> based on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mass.gov\/doc\/massachusetts-2025-2026-respiratory-illness-season-covid-19-vaccine-recommendations\/download\">MDPH recommendations<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Tdap booster<\/strong> is recommended every 10 years<\/li>\n<li><strong>Human Papillomavirus (HPV)<\/strong> series<\/li>\n<li><strong>Meningococcal-B (MenB)<\/strong> vaccine<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"#vaccine-records-submission\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"vaccine-records-submission\">How to Submit Your Documentation<\/h3>\n<p><strong>First, gather your documents.<\/strong> Allow enough time to obtain your records and needed signatures. When locating your vaccine records, try the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ask a parent or guardian<\/li>\n<li>Contact your healthcare provider or search in your online medical portal<\/li>\n<li>If you are a graduate student, submit a medical record request from your previous institution<\/li>\n<li>Contact your local or state health department. Many states and outside countries have vaccine registries<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Next, download the Immunization Requirements Form based on your program of study:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/shs\/files\/2025\/06\/Immunization-Requirements-Form.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Form for all general undergraduate, graduate, and non-degree students<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/shs\/files\/2025\/06\/Immunization-Requirements-Form-Clinical.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Form for students in medical, dental, or clinical sciences programs<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/shs\/files\/2025\/06\/Immunization-Requirements-Form-Summer.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Form for Summer Term (only) students<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Complete the Form with help from your healthcare provider.<\/strong> To be approved, your Form must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be signed by a healthcare provider<\/li>\n<li>Be completed in English (or officially translated into English)<\/li>\n<li>Be legible<\/li>\n<li>Be dated with the month, day, and year of the immunization.<br \/>\nStatements such as &#8220;received as a child&#8221;, &#8220;records were lost&#8221;, or &#8220;up to date&#8221; will not be accepted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Take a picture of your completed forms in a vertical orientation, or scan them to your computer.<\/strong> There should be one picture for each page.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Submit your completed forms using Patient Connect.<\/strong> (Note: We cannot accept medical information via email)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Log in to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/shs\/patient-connect-portal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patient Connect<\/a><\/li>\n<li>On the left-hand side, select <strong>Medical Clearances<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Select the <strong>Update<\/strong> button to the right or <strong>Immunization Record<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>Upload<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Select the document from your device<\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>Save<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Enter the record dates for each immunization by selecting the <strong>Update<\/strong> buttons<\/li>\n<li>Review and select <strong>Done<\/strong> when you are finished with each immunization record entry<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You will receive an email when your documents have been reviewed, typically in 1 week. If approved, your Patient Connect status will change to \u201csatisfied\u201d and your compliance will update on the MyBU portal.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have not received all required vaccines, please submit your immunization documentation for the ones you have. You can receive the remaining vaccines once on-campus by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/shs\/medical-care\/routine-preventive-care\/immunizations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">scheduling an appointment or attending an immunization clinic<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Unable to submit online?<\/h3>\n<p>We encourage you to use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/shs\/patient-connect-portal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patient Connect<\/a> because your compliance status will update much faster than standard mail.
