In fact, your earnings are still subject to both federal and state income taxes. However, by completing the federal W-4 and state M-4 forms, you can adjust your federal and state tax withholding or claim a tax exemption if you\u2019re eligible. And if you work over the summer, you\u2019ll also have Social Security and Medicare taxes (also known as FICA) withheld from your paychecks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are you an international student? Review the resources on this page and be sure you understand the <\/strong><a href=\"\/seo\/international\/taxes-international\/\"><strong>specific requirements<\/strong><\/a><strong> for international students.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/seo\/international\/taxes-international\/\"><button style=\"-webkit-border-radius: 12px; -moz-border-radius: 12px; border-radius: 12px; padding: 16px 24px; margin: 0px 100px 0px 0px; background-color: #cc0000; color: white; font-weight: 900;\" window=\"location=\"href=\"\/seo\/international\/taxes-international\/\" type=\"button\">Tax Information for International Students<\/button><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Taxes as a Student Employee<\/h4>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Forms W-4 and M4<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>The federal W-4 and state M-4 forms mandate how much in taxes Payroll should withhold from your paycheck. While you\u2019re not required to complete these forms, they can help ensure you\u2019re not overpaying\u2014or underpaying\u2014your taxes throughout the year. If you do not submit a W-4, the university will default to withholding the maximum amount at your income bracket: single with zero dependencies.<\/p>\n<p>Domestic students working on-campus positions can update their W-4 and M-4 tax withholding certificates through the BUworks Central Portal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"alert\">\n  <span class=\"material-icons\">&#xe002;<\/span> <strong>Depending on your eligibility, you\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"\/seo\/students\/getting-paid\/taxes\/tax-exemption\/\"><strong>may be exempt<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u00a0from a number of taxes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Form W-2<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>All employed students will receive a Form W-2 in January. The W-2 shows how much you earned during the previous calendar year and how much was withheld in taxes.\u00a0<strong>You need your W-2 to file federal and state tax returns.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Active Student Employees<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Electronic W-2s:<\/strong>\u00a0 You can access your W-2s by logging into the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ews-federation.equifax.com\/sso\/saml2\/0oa91j8fq7XG0XPPO697\/home\/bookmark\/0oa7splmgeDc7BkXK697\/2557\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">W-2 Dashboard<\/a>.\u00a0You will be asked to enter your BU username and Kerberos password and will be taken to a new BU Tax Form Management page.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you elect to receive your tax forms online, the election will be saved for future years, and you will no longer be mailed a paper copy of your W-2.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>W-2s prior to 2022 will continue to be available through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ppo.buw.bu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Employee Self-Service<\/a>\u00a0in the BUworks Central Portal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Physical W-2s:<\/strong> Physical W-2s are mailed by University Payroll in January, typically during the last week of the month.\u00a0Physical W-2s are mailed to the address on file at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ppo.buw.bu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BUworks Central Portal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Graduated\/Former Student Employees<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you have graduated and are no longer a student employee, you will receive your W-2 via US mail. You may also view and download a copy of your W-2 by following these instructions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Visit\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mytaxform.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.mytaxform.com<\/a> and enter\u00a0<strong>17160<\/strong>\u00a0for the Employer Name\/Code<\/li>\n<li>If you are a\u00a0<strong>first-time user<\/strong>, follow the steps shown below:\n<ul>\n<li>In the pop-up box, click on Register Now<\/li>\n<li>Follow the registration process<\/li>\n<li>After you are prompted to enter your email and personal phone number, you will receive a one-time push code if Equifax can verify your identity<\/li>\n<li>Once you are logged in, you must consent to receive your tax forms electronically before you can view them online<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"alert\">\n  <span class=\"material-icons\">&#xe002;<\/span> <strong>If you do not receive a mailed copy and you are unable to access your W-2 electronically using the instructions above, please contact\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:bupay@bu.edu\">Payroll<\/a>\u00a0immediately.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Need Assistance with your W-2?<\/strong><br \/>\nIf you missed the opportunity to opt in for online access, did not receive a mailed copy, or believe your W-2 is incorrect, please contact Payroll immediately at <a href=\"mailto:bupay@bu.edu\">bupay@bu.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Student Employment is not qualified to give students tax advice<\/strong>. Consult your parents or guardians for advice or seek out tax guidance from a professional. \u00a0For free tax help, contact the Internal Revenue Service or Massachusetts Department of Revenue.<br \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Guidance for Remote Out-of-State Employees<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re working outside of MA and won\u2019t be paying MA state income taxes, you can complete the\u00a0<a href=\"\/seo\/files\/2025\/01\/MA-Tax-Exempt-for-Non-MA-Residents.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MA Tax Exempt for Non-MA Residents form<\/a> and send it to\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:bupay@bu.edu\">Payroll<\/a> to be exempt from MA state income taxes.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve already had MA state taxes taken out of your paycheck during the year, you can fill out the tax exemption form, submit it to the Comptroller\u2019s Office, and contact Kathy Sirois, who will reverse the MA state taxes, as long as this is done before mid-December.<\/p>\n<p>This is an option\u00a0<strong>only\u00a0for out-of-state, fully remote student employees<\/strong>\u00a0whose remote employment has been confirmed and approved by the department. Supervisors with students looking to work remotely out of country should\u00a0<a href=\"\/seo\/contact-us\/\">contact Student Employment<\/a>\u00a0to discuss any potential tax implications.
