International students may begin working and be paid while their application for a Social Security number is being processed.<\/p>\n<p>If the student does not provide a valid Social Security number during any point of the hiring process, the student must provide this to <a href=\"\/seo\/about\/contact-us\/\">Student Employment<\/a> by the end of the calendar year.<\/p>\n<p>Students who update their record with their Social Security Number after their initial hire may submit the information through one of the following options. Government identification <strong>should not<\/strong> be shared through <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">regular<\/span> email or phone.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To submit in person, the student should go to the FirstPoint counter at 881 Commonwealth Ave, 2nd floor with their Social Security Number card and BU ID.<\/li>\n<li>To submit electronically, the student should <a href=\"https:\/\/securecontact.me\/seo@bu.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">send a secure email<\/a> with the subject &#8220;SSN Submission&#8221;. If the hyperlink does not work, the full link is: https:\/\/securecontact.me\/seo@bu.edu. Students should use their BU email. The email message must include full Social Security Number and UID.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">International Students - Applying for SSN<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>Any student employee who does not have a valid Social Security number must <a href=\"\/seo\/students\/international\/obtain-ssn\/\">obtain one from the Social Security Administration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>International students must also provide proof of employment when they apply for a Social Security number. The hiring department must complete a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/isso\/employment-internships\/social-security-cards\/social_security_certification\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Certification of F-1 Student On-Campus Employment for Social Security Number Application<\/a> and must print the certification on departmental letterhead. The student must then have this form certified by the ISSO before bringing it to the Social Security Administration.
