This form is required by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), a division of the Department of Homeland Security.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Supervisors may not allow a student to work beyond 3 days if the student has not completed a Form I-9. <\/strong>Failure to complete a Form I-9 within this timeframe will result in delayed payment for the student employee. This is a violation of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and <a href=\"https:\/\/webapps.dol.gov\/elaws\/whd\/flsa\/screen74.asp#:~:text=Violators%20of%20the%20child%20labor,conviction%20may%20result%20in%20imprisonment.\">can result in prosecution<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The hiring department is responsible for ensuring that any <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">new<\/span> student employee (never having worked or been paid by Boston University) completes Section 1 of the electronic Form I-9 prior to or on the first day of employment. If a student has previously completed a Form I-9 at Boston University as a student employee, <strong>they do not need to complete a new one<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Section 2 of the electronic Form I-9 must be completed by and in the physical presence of an authorized BU staff member. <strong>The student must be present when identification is reviewed during Section 2 of the Form I-9.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/seo\/files\/2025\/04\/Completing-Form-I-9-Section-2-for-Supervisors.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Step-by-step instructions<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/mymedia.bu.edu\/media\/t\/1_u6oxl2nr\">a video guide<\/a> for completing Section 2<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For <strong>domestic students<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Staff should direct the student to Student Employment&#8217;s <a href=\"\/seo\/resources\/required-paperwork\/\">Required Paperwork<\/a> webpage for instructions explaining how to complete section 1 of the form I-9.<\/li>\n<li>An authorized staff member must access the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.formi9.com\/formi9verify\/sso\/buseo\">Form I-9 vendor platform<\/a> after confirming the student has completed section 1.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For <strong>international students<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Staff should confirm the student&#8217;s visa type:\n<ul>\n<li>If F-1 visa, direct the student to Student Employment&#8217;s <a href=\"\/seo\/resources\/required-paperwork\/\">Required Paperwork<\/a> webpage for instructions explaining how to complete section 1 of the form I-9. On-campus work permission can be demonstrated by showing their <em>foreign passport, I-20 and I-94 (digital or printed).<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>If J-1 or other visa types, direct the student to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/isso\/employment-internships\/employment-at-bu\/\">ISSO<\/a>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>An authorized staff member must access the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.formi9.com\/formi9verify\/sso\/buseo\">Form I-9 vendor platform<\/a> after confirming the student has completed section 1.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul><\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Documents presented to the authorized BU staff member to complete Section 2 of the Form I-9 must be original and unexpired student identification. Copies of identifications are not accepted as a requirement of the USCIS. A list of acceptable documents are available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/i-9-central\/form-i-9-acceptable-documents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>. Once viewed, documents should be returned to the student.\u00a0 The university <strong>does not<\/strong> maintain copies.<\/p>\n<p>Usage of the electronic form I-9 is covered under your university data security agreement and federal perjury laws. <strong>Misuse of the electronic form I-9 is subject to University and Federal penalties.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h5 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Guidance for Completing an off-site I-9<\/h5><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Off-site I-9s are only used under extraordinary circumstances when a student employee is not on campus<\/strong>. If the student will be on campus before or by their start date, they should complete the I-9 in person with a university staff member. The requestor will receive notification of the request outcome.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>If approved, the student will be provided with a set of instructions to complete and submit their form I-9. They should read the instructions carefully.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><strong>If NOT approved, the student cannot work until an I-9 is completed on campus in person by the managing department or First Point.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>An off-site I-9 requires a live meeting between an Authorized Representative and the student employee. The meeting cannot be completed via video conference.
