After postdoctoral training in the <a href=\"https:\/\/genetics.hms.harvard.edu\/\">Department of Genetics at Harvard Medical School<\/a>, he joined Boston University as faculty in 2005. Dr. Segr\u00e8 is currently a Professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/biology\/\">Biology<\/a>, and Professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cds-faculty\/\">Computing and Data Science<\/a> at Boston University, with secondary appointments in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/academics\/departments-and-divisions\/biomedical-engineering\/\">Biomedical Engineering<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/physics\/\">Physics<\/a>. He is a core faculty member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/bioinformatics\/\">Bioinformatics Program<\/a> and of the <a href=\"https:\/\/bdc.bu.edu\/\">Biological Design Center<\/a>, and the founding Director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/microbu.org\">Boston University Microbiome Initiative<\/a>. Dr. Segr\u00e8 has been pursuing a quantitative understanding of the principles that govern the emergence, evolution and dynamics of biological systems, including the origin of life and the allocation of resources in the cell. Current research in the Segr\u00e8 laboratory is largely focused on the role of metabolism in natural and artificially designed microbial communities, with applications in biomedicine, metabolic
