{"id":410,"date":"2011-09-22T13:55:19","date_gmt":"2011-09-22T18:55:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/scnc\/?p=410"},"modified":"2016-03-03T17:51:21","modified_gmt":"2016-03-03T22:51:21","slug":"sargent-choice-apple-crisp-off","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/scnc\/2011\/09\/22\/sargent-choice-apple-crisp-off\/","title":{"rendered":"Sargent Choice Apple Crisp-Off!"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/sargentchoice\/about#Jenni\"> By Jenni Porto, Social Media &amp; Promotions Intern, Sargent Choice Nutrition Center<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Every Thursday until October 27th, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/budiningservice\">BU Dining Services<\/a> hosts a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sustainability\/campus-resources\/green-campus-tour\/farmers-market\/\">farmer\u2019s market<\/a> at the GSU Plaza from 12 noon \u2013 5pm.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-2356 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/sargentchoice\/files\/2011\/09\/Smoothie-Sustainability-Day-076-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Crisp\" width=\"574\" height=\"430\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Apple season is upon us, and with it comes delicious recipes!\u00a0 Last week, we decided to shake things up a bit at the BU farmer\u2019s market by competing in an apple crisp bake-off.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2358 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/sargentchoice\/files\/2011\/09\/Smoothie-Sustainability-Day-075-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Student with crisp\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The competition was tough and consisted of a variety of fruit crisps submitted from each of the dining halls on campus. The competitors included: Cranberry-Pear from Fresh Food Co., Blueberry-Peach from Towers, Triple-Berry from Shelton Hall, Blueberry-Pear from Myles Standish Hall, and our fiercest competitor\u2014A traditional Apple crisp from the GSU.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2359 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/sargentchoice\/files\/2011\/09\/Smoothie-Sustainability-Day-071-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"GSU and SC\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At Sargent Choice, we believe food should be healthy as well as delicious, and our recipe (boasting whole-wheat ingredients, canola oil in place of butter and reduced sugar) fits that bill. But don\u2019t just take our word for it, here\u2019s what samplers of the dish had to say:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s way better than a few of them. I actually like it better than my favorite Sargent choice food\u2026I appreciate the fact that it\u2019s a little lighter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s definitely the best one I\u2019ve had.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2360 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bu.edu\/sargentchoice\/files\/2011\/09\/Smoothie-Sustainability-Day-078-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Smoothie &amp; Sustainability Day 078\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Didn\u2019t get a chance to stop by to try some? We\u2019ve got the recipe so you can try it out for yourself:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Sargent Choice Apple Crisp Recipe:<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ingredients<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>3 lbs apples (approx. 9 medium apples), sliced<\/li>\n<li>1 TB Lemon Juice<\/li>\n<li>1\/4 cup white sugar<\/li>\n<li>1 TB cornstarch<\/li>\n<li>1\/4 cup whole wheat flour<\/li>\n<li>2\/3 cup rolled oats<\/li>\n<li>1\/2 cup brown sugar<\/li>\n<li>1 tsp cinnamon<\/li>\n<li>1\/8 tsp salt<\/li>\n<li>1\/4 cup canola oil<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Method:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Preheat oven to 375 degrees<\/p>\n<p>1. For the topping: Combine flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt and canola oil in a medium bowl and work them together with a fork or your fingertips until uniformly moistened.<\/p>\n<p>2. To make the filling:\u00a0 Combine the apples peeled and sliced into 1\/2 inch slices), lemon juice, sugar and cornstarch.<\/p>\n<p>3. To assemble:\u00a0 Coat a 9&#215;13 baking dish with cooking spray. Transfer the apple mixture to the dish.
