Our nutrition experts are committed to helping you develop a well-balanced plan of eating to meet your health goals while strictly avoiding your food allergens.<\/p>\n<a class=\"callout-block \" href=\"\/scnc\/foodallergy\/\"><span>Food Allergy &amp; Intolerance Resources for BU Students<\/span><br \/>\nSupport for students with food-related medical conditions<br \/>\n<img class=\"callout-img\" alt=\"callout-block-arrow\" src=\"\/scnc\/files\/2016\/05\/callout-block-arrow.png\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a>\n<p>Common food allergens include, but are not limited to, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, milk, eggs, wheat, and soy. If you are concerned that you might have a food allergy but have not yet received an official diagnosis, we recommend that you visit a board-certified allergist. For more information about food allergy diagnosis and testing, visit Food Allergy Research &amp; Education (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.foodallergy.org\/diagnosis-and-testing\">FARE<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3>Food Intolerances<\/h3>\n<p>Our RDNs are also specially trained to help you manage food intolerances. Food intolerances are nonimmunologic adverse reactions that may cause uncomfortable symptoms. Common intolerances include lactose intolerance, non-celiac gluten intolerance, and FODMAPs (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols).<\/p>\n<p>Our RDNs are participating providers\u00a0for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Aetna<\/li>\n<li>Aetna Student Health<\/li>\n<li>Blue Cross Blue Shield<\/li>\n<li>Cigna Healthcare<\/li>\n<li>Harvard Pilgrim Health Care<\/li>\n<li>Tufts Health Plan<\/li>\n<li>United Healthcare<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">Register for an appointment with one of our experts today.<\/h4>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Individuals Outside the University<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>We encourage you to check with your insurance company to determine if your health plan includes a nutrition counseling benefit. Register below using our secure communication system, and our Staff Coordinator will contact you to answer any questions you may have and schedule your first appointment.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"register-btn\" href=\"\/scnc\/forms\/general\/\">Register<\/a><\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">BU Students<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>Nutrition Counseling<\/strong><br \/>\nSCNC RDNs are available to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide education and support for a newly diagnosed food-related medical condition.<\/li>\n<li>Provide support to students managing an existing condition at Boston University.<\/li>\n<li>Liaise between students and Dining Services to ensure that students\u2019 dietary needs are met on campus.<\/li>\n<li>Provide training and access to the Gluten Free Pantry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Students at nutritional risk are eligible for up to three nutrition counseling sessions per academic year (July 1 &#8211; June 30) at no charge. Students requiring more than three visits per academic year may continue to work with their SCNC RDN on a fee-for-service basis. Students may be eligible for health insurance coverage for these visits, depending on their healthcare plan. Deductibles, copayments, and\/or coinsurance may apply.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"register-btn\" href=\"\/scnc\/forms\/student\/\">Register<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Gluten Free &amp; Special Meal Accommodations are available:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To prevent cross contact, access to the Gluten Free Pantry is limited to students who attend a training session with a RDN. Upon successful completion of the training, access is granted via the student\u2019s BU Terrier Card. This program is based on the scientific evidence about nutrition and activity for health promotion, with special consideration for cardiac risk factors (including diabetes, elevated blood pressure or cholesterol) and digestive disorders. Participants are guided through an assessment of their nutrient needs in order to establish realistic and sustainable goals, taking into consideration lifestyle demands and constraints, food restrictions and preferences, and health goals. Skills and strategies for meal planning, dining out, food shopping, and recipe modification are emphasized.
