{"id":47079,"date":"2017-01-31T14:37:17","date_gmt":"2017-01-31T19:37:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sargent\/?p=47079"},"modified":"2018-02-21T16:01:28","modified_gmt":"2018-02-21T21:01:28","slug":"pt-faculty-honored-with-new-grants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sargent\/pt-faculty-honored-with-new-grants\/","title":{"rendered":"PT Faculty Honored with New Grants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Several faculty in the department of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sargent\/academics\/departments-programs\/physical-therapy-department\/\" target=\"_blank\">Physical Therapy &amp; Athletic Training<\/a> were honored with prestigious grants from Boston University this semester.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment46283\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment46283\" style=\"width: 144px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"\/sargent\/files\/2016\/10\/LouAwad_0020.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-46283\" alt=\"LouAwad_0020\" src=\"\/sargent\/files\/2016\/10\/LouAwad_0020-424x636.jpg\" width=\"134\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sargent\/files\/2016\/10\/LouAwad_0020-424x636.jpg 424w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sargent\/files\/2016\/10\/LouAwad_0020-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sargent\/files\/2016\/10\/LouAwad_0020-683x1024.jpg 683w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 134px) 100vw, 134px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment46283\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lou Awad, PT, DPT, PhD<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Lou Awad, PT, DPT, PhD<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Assistant Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www-staging.bu.edu\/sargent\/profile\/louis-awad\/\">Lou Awad<\/a> was awarded an Integrated Pilot Grant from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ctsi\/\" target=\"_blank\">Boston University Clinical and Translational Science Institute<\/a> for his\u00a0research on\u00a0&#8220;Integrating Computer Vision with Wearable Sensors to Advance Targeted Locomotor Retraining.&#8221; Awad is examining\u00a0the feasibility of merging two sensing modalities\u2014computer vision and body-worn inertial sensors\u2014to advance post-stroke gait rehabilitation.\u00a0He is\u00a0collaborating with co-PI\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/eng\/profile\/roberto-tron\/\" target=\"_blank\">Assistant Professor Roberto Tron<\/a>\u00a0from BU&#8217;s department of Mechanical Engineering.<\/p>\n<p><span>Awad\u00a0is also\u00a0an a<\/span><span>ssociate faculty member at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering and a\u00a0research faculty member at Harvard University&#8217;s<\/span><span> Stroke Research and Recovery Institute at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital.\u00a0He is\u00a0the d<\/span><span>irector of Boston University&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/nrl\/\" target=\"_blank\">Neuromotor Recovery Laboratory<\/a>.<\/span><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment13822\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment13822\" style=\"width: 144px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"\/sargent\/files\/2009\/09\/11-3217-SARFACULTY-0065.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-13822\" alt=\"11-3217-SARFACULTY-0065\" src=\"\/sargent\/files\/2009\/09\/11-3217-SARFACULTY-0065-423x636.jpg\" width=\"134\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sargent\/files\/2009\/09\/11-3217-SARFACULTY-0065-423x636.jpg 423w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sargent\/files\/2009\/09\/11-3217-SARFACULTY-0065-768x1154.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sargent\/files\/2009\/09\/11-3217-SARFACULTY-0065-681x1024.jpg 681w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 134px) 100vw, 134px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment13822\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Julie Keysor, PhD, PT<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Julie Keysor,\u00a0PhD, PT<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>Associate Professor and Director of BU <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/enact\/\" target=\"_blank\">Center for Enhancing Activity and Participation among Persons with Arthritis<\/a> (ENACT)\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www-staging.bu.edu\/sargent\/profile\/julie-j-keysor-pt-phd\/\">Julie Keysor<\/a>\u00a0received an award from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/evanscenteribr\/\" target=\"_blank\">Evans Center for Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research<\/a> on BU&#8217;s Medical Campus.<\/p>\n<p>Keysor&#8217;s grant will help fund her work at the new\u00a0Mobile and Electronic Health <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/evanscenteribr\/the-arcs\/\" target=\"_blank\">Affinity Research Collaborative <\/a>(ARC), where she serves as co-director. This ARC is\u00a0an inter-disciplinary collaboration that seeks to conduct state-of-the art research and training in mobile and electronic health to improve the health of underserved populations across the lifespan.\u00a0Keysor&#8217;s project brings together researchers from across Boston University\u2014including ARC co-directors\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/busm\/profile\/lisa-quintiliani\/\" target=\"_blank\">Assistant Professor Lisa Quintiliani<\/a><span style=\"margin: 0px; color: #1f497d; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;\"> <\/span>at the School of Medicine,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/dental\/profile\/belinda-borrelli\/\" target=\"_blank\">Professor Belinda Borrelli<\/a>\u00a0at the School of Dental Medicine, and colleagues from the College of Engineering\u2014to advance mHealth and eHealth initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>Keysor is also the\u00a0PI for one of three pilot projects\u00a0to build effective mHealth and eHealth applications. Keysor\u2019s project, \u201cDevelopment of a Novel e-Health App for Knee OA Exercise Adherence,\u201d will explore user preferences to develop features of a mobile application to support adherence to physical activity programs among people with OA. Based on this feedback, investigators will develop a prototype and intervention program followed by user testing.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment47083\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment47083\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"\/sargent\/files\/2017\/01\/Kumar-1.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-47083\" alt=\"Kumar\" src=\"\/sargent\/files\/2017\/01\/Kumar-1-454x636.jpeg\" width=\"150\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sargent\/files\/2017\/01\/Kumar-1-454x636.jpeg 454w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sargent\/files\/2017\/01\/Kumar-1-768x1077.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sargent\/files\/2017\/01\/Kumar-1-730x1024.jpeg 730w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sargent\/files\/2017\/01\/Kumar-1.jpeg 1486w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment47083\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Deepak Kumar, PT, PhD, OCS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Deepak Kumar, PT, PhD, OCS<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>Assistant Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www-staging.bu.edu\/sargent\/profile\/deepak-kumar-pt-phd-ocs\/\">Deepak Kumar<\/a><\/span>\u00a0received an Integrated Pilot Grant from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ctsi\/\" target=\"_blank\">Boston University Clinical and Translational Science Institute<\/a>\u00a0for his project &#8220;Quantitative Tool for Assessment of Varus Thrust in Knee Osteoarthritis.&#8221; Kumar is developing\u00a0a clinical tool for identification and quantification of varus thrust in people with knee osteoarthritis,\u00a0ultimately using this tool to\u00a0identify interventions to reduce varus thrust in this population.<\/p>\n<p>Kumar is collaborating with co-investigators\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/clinepi\/faculty-their-research\/david-felson\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. David Felson<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/radiology\/qic\/research-team\/ali-guermazi-md\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Ali Guermazi<\/a> from the\u00a0BU School of Medicine, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/profile\/michael-lavalley\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Michael LaValley <\/a>from BU School of Public Health, and Professor Jim Richards at the University of Central Lancashire.<\/p>\n<p>Kumar holds a joint appointment\u00a0as a<span>ssistant professor\u00a0at the\u00a0BU<\/span><span>\u00a0School of Medicine and\u00a0is the director of BU&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kumarmailab.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Movement &amp; Applied Imaging Lab<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Several faculty in the department of Physical Therapy &amp; Athletic Training were honored with prestigious grants from Boston University this semester.
