With the resources of Boston University and the surrounding area, doctoral students have the opportunity to take courses in a wide variety of departments across Boston University (e.g. psychology, linguistics, graduate medical sciences, education, engineering, and neuroscience), and to benefit from other university offerings in the area. The program is designed to be individualized and to combine academic work with multiple research experiences.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Helvetica',sans-serif; color: #676f6f;\">In fact, your entire program\u2014not just your research projects\u2014will be original, created by you and for you with the help of your advisor and mentor. Because of the vast range of opportunities open to you at a large liberal arts university and research institution, the specific path you choose will be custom-tailored.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Extensive Academic Resources<\/h2>\n<p>The chance to individualize your program begins with the many academic options at Boston University. For example, besides classes in the Department of Speech, Language &amp; Hearing Sciences, you can take courses in the University\u2019s other schools and colleges. You can pursue interests in psychology, linguistics, medicine, engineering, rehabilitation, education, or public health. Study the neurobiology of aging or autism. Take a course in brain-mapping, biomedical engineering, biostatistics, or health policy. Choose from dozens of offerings from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/neuro\/graduate\/about-2\/curriculum\/course-offerings\/\">Graduate Program for Neuroscience (GPN)<\/a>, open to graduate students across BU. You can also take advantage of courses at other universities in the Boston area by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/reg\/registration\/consortia\/\">cross-registering<\/a>\u00a0at Boston College, Brandeis University, and Tufts University.<\/p>\n<p>Boston University hosts an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sargent\/academics\/departments-programs\/speech-language-hearing-sciences\/phd-in-slhs\/research-opportunities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NIDCD T32<\/a> program for eligible U.S. citizens or green card holders, which provides multidisciplinary training to prepare a cadre of academic researchers who are highly literate in the methods, objectives, and theoretical structure of health research in communication sciences and disorders (CSD). While select students in the PhD program in Speech, Language &amp; Hearing Sciences are considered for funded positions in this prestigious program, all students benefit from the resources, coursework, and infrastructure.<\/p>\n<div data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">PhD students are eligible to receive up to five years of fellowship funding. This five-year period starts at matriculation and expires at the conclusion of the summer term in the fifth year of the PhD program (or at graduation, whichever is sooner). \u00a0The fellowship will consist of a scholarship to fully cover tuition and academic fees, as well as a stipend of $47,741 per calendar year (based on 2025-26). \u00a0Students also receive health insurance (the SHIP plan) through Aetna Student Health.<\/div>\n<div><br style=\"clear: both;\" \/>This funding is contingent upon the PhD student serving as a teaching and\/or research fellow, maintenance of satisfactory academic progress as defined by the department and Sargent College of Rehabilitation Sciences, and the continued availability of university and other resources.<\/div>\n<div><br style=\"clear: both;\" \/>Please note that research, teaching, and instructional positions are covered by a Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiated between Boston University and the Boston University Graduate Workers\u2019 Union (BUGWU)\/Service Employees International Union (SEIU), Local 509.<\/div>\n<h2><br style=\"clear: both;\" \/><br style=\"clear: both;\" \/>A Strong Research Focus<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/sargent\/files\/2020\/03\/studying-636x407.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-62342 alignleft\" width=\"360\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sargent\/files\/2020\/03\/studying-636x407.jpg 636w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sargent\/files\/2020\/03\/studying.jpg 714w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/>This program is an excellent research track for students who are interested in becoming academic researchers in speech, language &amp; hearing sciences \u2013 including students who have previously earned clinical certification in speech-language pathology* or who want to pursue an academic or research career in audiology. Your opportunities for research involvement begin in the first year and may include lab rotations which you can schedule with your mentor. Research study options are available through dozens of seminar offerings at BU on both the Charles River and Medical Campuses. Interdisciplinary centers including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/csn\/\">Center for Systems Neuroscience<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hrc\/\">Hearing R<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hrc\/\">esearch Cente<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/hrc\/\">r<\/a> sponsor seminar series. Departmental faculty lead NIH-funded conferences in the areas of <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.academyofaphasia.org\/\">aphasia<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/bucld\/\">child language<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/stepplab\/collaborators\/bsmcs\/\">speech motor control<\/a>.
