“A Shock to the Global Nutrition System”- Coauthored by Lindsey Locks in AJCN

In a new paper in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Assistant Professor of Health Sciences and Global Health Lindsey Locks and co-authors discuss how the dismantling of USAID will have detrimental effects for global nutrition health. The authors argue:

The abrupt withdrawal from WHO and subsequent dismantling of USAID are colossal and unforced policy mistakes with immediate humanitarian consequences. These moves will not only harm the world’s poorest communities but also weaken global health, nutrition science, and US relationships and standing in the world. The impact will be profound:

  • Lives will be lost due to disrupted humanitarian, health and nutrition programs.
  • Livelihoods will be destroyed both in the US and abroad.
  • Critical expertise, infrastructure, and data needed to combat food insecurity and malnutrition will be lost.
  • US presence in hundreds of countries promoting health, education, peace and solidarity are being abruptly halted, leaving a diplomatic and humanitarian void.
