{"id":11210,"date":"2015-09-04T15:09:28","date_gmt":"2015-09-04T19:09:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rs\/?post_type=profile&#038;p=11210"},"modified":"2023-09-21T13:04:56","modified_gmt":"2023-09-21T17:04:56","slug":"james-iffland","status":"publish","type":"profile","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rs\/profile\/james-iffland\/","title":{"rendered":"James Iffland"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Research and Teaching<\/h2>\n<p>Professor Iffland is the author of\u00a0<em>Quevedo and the Grotesque<\/em>\u00a0(2 volumes, 1978 and 1982),\u00a0<em>Ensayos sobre la poes\u00eda revolucionaria de Centroam\u00e9rica<\/em>\u00a0(1994),\u00a0<em>De fiestas y aguafiestas: risa, locura e ideolog\u00eda en Cervantes y Avellaneda<\/em>\u00a0(1999), and <em>Para llegar a Roque Dalton:\u00a0 peque\u00f1os infiernos y otros para\u00edsos (estudio pol\u00edtico-po\u00e9tico)<\/em> (2021). He is also editor of Francisco de Quevedo\u2019s picaresque novel\u00a0<em>El busc\u00f3n<\/em>\u00a0(1988) and\u00a0<em>Quevedo in Perspective: Eleven Essays for the Quadricentennial<\/em>\u00a0(1982), and co-editor of\u00a0<em>El \u201cQuijote\u201d desde Am\u00e9rica<\/em>\u00a0(2006) and <em>El \u201cQuijote\u201d desde Am\u00e9rica (Segunda Parte)<\/em> (2016). His latest book, <em>Usos y abusos: \u00a0ensayos sobre el destino social del\u00a0\u201cQuijote\u201d<\/em>, is currently in press in Spain.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Iffland has written on a wide variety of topics related to the Spanish Golden Age, centering mainly on Cervantes and Quevedo. Work in progress in this area includes a forthcoming book entitled <em>Usos y abusos:\u00a0 ensayos sobre el destino social del \u201cQuijote\u201d<\/em>. \u00a0A secondary field of interest is contemporary Central American literature. Among the courses he teaches are those on Cervantes\u2019s\u00a0<em>Don Quijote<\/em>, Golden Age prose fiction, poetry, and drama, and literature and social change in Latin America. He is also a faculty member in the Center for Latin American Studies Program at the Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University.<\/p>\n<p>Currently an Associate Editor of\u00a0<em>Cervantes:\u00a0 The Bulletin of the Cervantes Society of America<\/em>, Professor Iffland has been a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, the recipient of a Fulbright scholarship (Argentina), and a Woodrow Wilson Independent Study Award (Mexico). He was named the Central American Visiting Scholar at the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies of Harvard University (2005-2006) and was a Senior Research Fellow at the Boston University Center for the Humanities (spring, 2006).\u00a0 In 2010 he was inducted into the Orden de Isabel la Cat\u00f3lica by the Spanish government, receiving a \u201cCruz de Oficial\u201d in recognition for his contributions to the study and dissemination of Hispanic culture.
