{"id":2829,"date":"2007-11-07T17:06:00","date_gmt":"2007-11-07T21:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rs\/?p=2829"},"modified":"2011-08-22T22:46:25","modified_gmt":"2011-08-23T02:46:25","slug":"romance-studies-names-two-visiting-scholars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rs\/2007\/11\/07\/romance-studies-names-two-visiting-scholars\/","title":{"rendered":"Romance Studies Names Two Visiting Scholars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Romance Studies welcomes two Visiting  Scholars for 2007-2008, film director <strong>Juan  Mandelbaum<\/strong> and Mexican literary scholar Gustavo Illades.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mandelbaum<\/strong> is at work on &#8220;Our Disappeared  \/ Nuestros Desaparecidos&#8221;, a  documentary he describes as &#8220;a personal search for  the souls of friends  and loved ones who were caught in the vise of the military  and  \u2018disappeared&#8217; in <a href=\"\/rs\/files\/2011\/07\/juan-mandelbaum.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2832\" title=\"juan-mandelbaum\" src=\"\/rs\/files\/2011\/07\/juan-mandelbaum.jpg\" alt=\"juan-mandelbaum\" width=\"192\" height=\"144\" \/><\/a>Argentina during the 1976-1983 military dictatorship.&#8221;   Past projects have included several hour-long documentaries for PBS on  poetry,  painting, photography, painting, and music. His production  &#8220;Dvorak at the  Col\u00f3n&#8221;, about the New England Conservatory&#8217;s Youth  Philharmonic Orchestra&#8217;s  trip to Latin America was an Emmy Nominee, and   won a host of other awards. Over the years, he has been a frequent and  generous  participant in our Writing in the Americas program.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gustavo  Illades Aguiar<\/strong>, of the Universidad Aut\u00f3noma  Metropolitana-Iztapalpa, Mexico, will be  pursuing &#8220;A Poetics of the  Voice in 15th to 17th century  Spanish Literature.&#8221; His project studies  the phenomenon of orality particularly  in the 15th-century masterpiece <em>La  Celestina<\/em> and in <em>Don Quijote<\/em>. In  examining orality, he draws on sources ranging from Catholic <em>artes <a href=\"\/rs\/files\/2011\/07\/illades.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2833\" title=\"illades\" src=\"\/rs\/files\/2011\/07\/illades.jpg\" alt=\"illades\" width=\"192\" height=\"144\" \/><\/a>praedicandi<\/em> to the &#8220;natural  philosophy&#8221; of the Renaissance to early modern forms  of linguistics. Illades is  the author of books on Cervantes&#8217;s <em>El  cautivo<\/em>; on <em>La Celestina<\/em>; on the  newspaper <em>Regeneraci\u00f3n<\/em>; and of dozens  of studies on early modern Spanish literature. He is co-editor, with James  Iffland, of <em>El Quijote desde Am\u00e9rica<\/em>,  proceedings of the Cervantes symposium in Puebla in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>Other recent Visiting Scholars have  included Argentine composer <strong>Osvaldo Golijov<\/strong>, who gave a memorable  presentation about his opera <em>Ainadamar<\/em>,  as produced by Peter Sellars, and noted Mexican literary critic <strong>Gui<\/strong><strong>llermo Sheridan <\/strong>(Spring 2007), who worked on several new books, and discussed his essays, criticism and biography\u00a0 with our graduate students.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Romance Studies welcomes two Visiting Scholars for 2007-2008, film director Juan Mandelbaum and Mexican literary scholar Gustavo Illades.
