MELANCHOLIC LITERATURE in\u00a0the\u00a017th-19th CENTURIES<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Open Cultural Studies”\u00a0(www.degruyter.com\/CULTURE<\/span><\/a>) invites submissions for a\u00a0topical\u00a0issue on\u00a0MELANCHOLIC LITERATURE in\u00a0the\u00a017th-19th CENTURIES, edited by \u00c1ngeles Garc\u00eda Calder\u00f3n (University of C\u00f3rdoba, Spain).<\/p>\n

The language\u00a0and aesthetics\u00a0of melancholy are themes present in numerous literary works.\u00a0In\u00a0the English-speaking\u00a0world,\u00a0works such as\u00a0John Milton’s \u201cIl Penseroso\u201d\u00a0or Anne Finch’s \u201cThe Spleen: A Pindaric Ode\u201d\u00a0stand out as key examples in this genre.<\/p>\n

European cultures and literatures configure their own traditions\u00a0regarding the embodiment of melancholy in literary work, both in prose and verse.\u00a0This melancholic literature may reflect suffering, depression, and deep emotion, but also beauty. It may also draw on historical, artistic, medical and psychological aspects of melancholy. Similarly, the literary\u00a0discourse on melancholy contains\u00a0medical aspects, philosophical themes, and enormous psychological depth.<\/p>\n

This call centres on the presence of melancholy in European literature –\u00a0fiction, poetry, and drama –\u00a0of the 17th-19th centuries. We are seeking papers on both canonical and classic works,\u00a0as well as papers on\u00a0lesser-known works and cultures, that feature\u00a0melancholic discourse.<\/p>\n

HOW TO SUBMIT<\/p>\n

Submissions will be accepted from September 1\u00a0to December 31, 2021, via the on-line submission system at\u00a0https:\/\/www.editorialmanager.com\/culture\/<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

As the article type, choose \u201cResearch Article: Melancholic Literature\u201d.Before submission authors should carefully read the Instructions for Authors, available at
\nhttps:\/\/www.degruyter.com\/publication\/journal_key\/CULTURE\/downloadAsset\/CULTURE_Instruction%20for%20Authors.pdf<\/span><\/a>All contributions will undergo critical peer-review before being accepted for publication.<\/p>\n

As a general rule, publication costs should be covered by\u00a0Article Publishing Charges<\/strong>\u00a0(APC); that is, be defrayed by the authors, their affiliated institutions, funders or sponsors. Authors without access to publishing funds are encouraged to discuss potential discounts or waivers with the Managing Editor of the journal Katarzyna Tempczyk (katarzyna.tempczyk@degruyter.com<\/a>) before submitting their manuscript.<\/p>\n
