{"id":20851,"date":"2020-07-18T20:39:03","date_gmt":"2020-07-19T00:39:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rs\/?page_id=20851"},"modified":"2026-07-02T14:44:53","modified_gmt":"2026-07-02T18:44:53","slug":"hispanic-language-literatures","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rs\/graduate\/graduate\/hispanic-language-literatures\/","title":{"rendered":"Hispanic Language &#038; Literatures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With strength in film, music, art, and literature and its vibrant intellectual community, Boston University is an ideal place for graduate study in Spanish.<\/p>\n<p>Our\u00a0graduate program in Hispanic Language &amp; Literatures offers advanced literature, culture and cinema courses leading to the Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy.\u00a0The curriculum provides students with a\u00a0rich experience in reading and interpreting a wide variety of literary, filmic, linguistic, and cultural texts.<\/p>\n<p>The small size of our classes facilitates interaction between an excellent cohort of graduate students and faculty who are leaders in their respective fields. Our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rs\/academics\/graduate\/hispanic-language-literatures\/gradaute-faculty-in-spanish\/\">Spanish faculty<\/a>\u00a0boasts diverse expertise and interests, including cross-cultural exchanges in medieval Iberia; gender and sexuality studies, women\u2019s literature, theories of authorship, and ecofeminism; the Latin American and Iberian avant-gardes and their legacies; and the study of leading figures in Spanish and Latin American literature.<\/p>\n<p>The Romance Studies \u201cVoces Hisp\u00e1nicas\u201d program, funded by Santander Bank, offers a wealth of concerts, films, and lectures. Our Hispanic Graduate Student Association (AEGE), in cooperation with the French graduate students, organizes an annual\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rs\/community\/graduate-student-conference\/\">graduate student conference<\/a>\u00a0that attracts participants from throughout the United States and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>BU\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cims\/\">Cinema &amp; Media Studies<\/a>, hosted in the Romance Studies Department,\u00a0supplies our students with engaging lectures and film screenings\/discussions and also furnishes them with the opportunity to spend a semester as the teaching fellow for a class in the cinema studies program.<\/p>\n<p>BU\u2019s very active\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/las\/\">Latin American Studies Center<\/a>\u00a0generates a continual flow of events featuring writers, thinkers, filmmakers and other figures of note from the Hispanic world. Faculty and students collaborate with the <a href=\"http:\/\/bu.edu\/translation\">MFA in Spanish Literary Translation<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gcws.mit.edu\/\">Boston-area study consortia<\/a> and other BU centers for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rs\/community\/regional-thematic-studies-centers\/\">regional and thematic studies,<\/a>\u00a0such as the Women\u2019s, Gender, &amp; Sexuality Studies Program, further enrich the life of our campus.<\/p>\n<p>A plentitude of\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rs\/community\/other-languages-and-related-programs-at-bu\/\">language and humanities organizations<\/a>\u00a0 support graduate-student teaching and research.\u00a0The Instituto Cervantes at nearby Harvard University sponsors numerous lectures, graduate-student symposia, and other events of interest. Additionally, the Boston area hosts consulates from ten countries of the Spanish and Portuguese speaking world.<\/p>\n<p>Our program also offers students opportunities beyond the Boston area. Through a partnership with Boston University\u2019s highly regarded study-abroad programs, our graduate students have the opportunity to serve as tutors for a summer at BU\u2019s undergraduate program in Madrid.
