{"id":20467,"date":"2020-07-02T10:10:48","date_gmt":"2020-07-02T14:10:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rs\/?page_id=20467"},"modified":"2025-08-06T15:49:29","modified_gmt":"2025-08-06T19:49:29","slug":"spanish","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rs\/undergraduate\/spanish\/","title":{"rendered":"Spanish"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Study Spanish at Boston University<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Our literature and culture courses for majors and minors explore a range of periods and topics.\u00a0 Recent courses have dealt with gendered literary production in Latin America; sexuality and religion in medieval Iberia; the textual construction of Latin American &#8216;thirdworldness&#8217;; Latin American and Spanish film; poetry, painting, and the sister arts; intellectual currents between Spain and the Americas; the social poetry of Central America; and individual authors like Borges, Lorca, Gald\u00f3s, Vallejo, M\u00e1rquez, Quevedo, Cervantes and Dar\u00edo.<\/p>\n<p>The Spanish section is also home to a thriving language program. Six semesters of communicative courses put beginner, intermediate, and advanced students directly in touch with the language, literature, and culture of the Spanish-speaking world, preparing them for global citizenship and international careers. Advanced learners at the third-year level may focus on such diverse topics as Latino culture, business Spanish, or the techniques of poetry writing.\u00a0Spanish majors and minors have<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/abroad\">study-abroad and\u00a0internship<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>opportunities in Madrid and many other locations.<\/p>\n<p>The faculty in Spanish cover a variety of fields.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rs\/profile\/alicia-borinsky\/\">Alicia Borinsky<\/a>, widely known as a poet and fiction writer, teaches modern and contemporary Latin American literature. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rs\/profile\/christopher-maurer\/\">Christopher Maurer<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>teaches Spanish poetry as well as the intersection of biography, editing, and translation. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rs\/profile\/nicolas-fernandez-medina\/\">Nicol\u00e1s Fern\u00e1ndez-Medina<\/a> offers courses on Romanticism, Modernism, Avant-garde, Iberian Studies, Sexuality and Gender Studies, and the body. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rs\/profile\/daniel-erker\/\">Daniel Erker<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>gives courses in Linguistics and Hispanic Linguistics, an area in which we offer a double major (Spanish\/Linguistics).<span> <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rs\/profile\/anita-savo\/\">Anita Savo<\/a> teaches the literatures and cultures of medieval Spain, with an emphasis on cross-cultural exchange among Christians, Jews, and Muslims. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rs\/profile\/24971\/\">Catalina Rodriguez<\/a> teaches Latin American literature and culture from the nineteenth century onward, with a focus on gender and sexuality studies, women\u2019s literature, theories of authorship, ecofeminism, and queer literature.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Overview of the Program<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>All majors must complete 11 courses, and each minor must complete 6. <span>Out of these courses, majors must fulfill each of the\u00a0 distributional requirements outlined below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/rs\/files\/2025\/02\/Spanish-MajorMinor.pdf\">Spanish Major Guide<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/rs\/files\/2025\/02\/Spanish-MajorMinor-dragged.pdf\">Spanish Minor Guide<\/a><\/p>\n<p>To Declare a Major or Minor in Spanish, please click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rs\/academics\/undergraduate\/declare-a-major-minor-in-romance-studies\/\">here<\/a> and follow the instructions based on your current school or college.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Honors Program in Spanish<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The honors Program in Hispanic Language and Literatures requires 14 classes in all, to be completed with an average GPA of at least 3.7.<\/p>\n<p>Please click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rs\/files\/2012\/11\/Spanish-Honors_2012-2013.pdf\">Honors Program in Spanish<\/a> for more information on requirements for achieving honors in Italian Studies.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Learning Outcomes<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Advanced knowledge of major themes in Hispanic literature and culture in their historical contexts and familiarity with major literary genres.<\/li>\n<li>Knowledge of events, periods, and people who have shaped the history of the Spanish-speaking world.<\/li>\n<li>Advanced proficiency and accuracy in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding the Spanish language as used in different areas of the Spanish-speaking world, including the U.S., Spanish America, and Spain.
