The application system opens to accept new applications on Sept. 1, for entry into the program in the fall term of the following year.<\/p>\n<p><em>Please note that the Terminal MA Application deadlines are for students who plan to get an MA and then leave BU. About half of our graduate students here in Romance Studies are international. You&#8217;ll find that Boston is a diverse city that is very welcoming to international students.<\/p>\n<p>The Graduate School of Arts &amp; Sciences website provides detailed information on how to apply as an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/admissions\/phd-mfa\/international-students\/\">international student<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<h2>Frequently Asked Questions<\/h2>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Should I apply to the doctoral program or to the master's degree program?<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>We offer a terminal MA program and a doctoral program in both French Language &amp; Literature and Hispanic Language &amp; Literatures.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>If you plan to earn a PhD<\/strong>, apply to the doctoral program, even if you do not yet have an MA degree. You can apply to the doctoral program directly after completing your bachelor&#8217;s degree. The doctoral program includes the option to earn an MA degree <em>en route<\/em> to the PhD.<\/li>\n<li><strong>If you plan to earn <em>only<\/em> an MA degree and <em>not<\/em> a doctorate<\/strong>, apply to the terminal MA program.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>In most cases, students should apply to the doctoral program. No department code is needed.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Do I need to submit TOEFL scores?<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>Almost all international students need to submit an official score report for the TOEFL or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/admissions\/phd-mfa\/international-students\/\">another English language exam accepted by BU<\/a>. There are a few <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/admissions\/phd-mfa\/international-students\/\">exceptions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Please note that citizens of Puerto Rico are U.S. citizens and do NOT need to submit TOEFL scores.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Do I need to submit GRE scores?<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>No. We do not require GRE scores from any applicant.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">What information should I put on the summary page?<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>The purpose of the summary page is to help the admissions committee understand more fully what you have studied. Please list each class you have taken that is relevant to the study of French (if applying to the French program) or Hispanic (if applying to the Spanish program) literature or related fields, along with the grade received and a brief description of the content of the course. If you can provide the official course description from your university, that is ideal &#8211; but if not, please write your own description of approximately 40 words.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Can I send application materials directly to the Romance Studies Department?<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>All application materials must be submitted to the Graduate School of Arts &amp; Sciences via the <a href=\"https:\/\/bu-grs.liaisoncas.com\/applicant-ux\/#\/login\">online application<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">How is my application evaluated?<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>Important factors in the department\u2019s ranking of applicants include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The breadth and quality of the undergraduate experience<\/li>\n<li>The quality of the personal statement and writing sample<\/li>\n<li>The strength of the letters of recommendation<\/li>\n<li>The evidence of language skills suitable to graduate study<\/li>\n<li>The suitability of the department\u2019s programs to the particular applicant<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The department evaluates the TOEFL scores of international applicants on a case by case basis.<\/p>\n<p>It is expected that applicants for graduate study will hold a BA degree or its equivalent in a field related to the program they apply to. The department continues to look favorably on applications from candidates who have completed or will soon complete a relevant MA degree. However, candidates with only a BA degree are welcome to apply directly for admission to the doctoral programs.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Can I request a waiver of the application fee?<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>GRS is pleased to be able to offer fee waivers to doctoral applicants who fit certain criteria. See the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/admissions\/phd-mfa\/apply\/fee-waiver\/\">GRS website<\/a> for details.<\/p>\n<p>Please note that requests for waivers of the application fee require five business days of processing time. Also, while we can waive the fee, we cannot reimburse for a fee that has already been paid.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<h2>Financial Support<\/h2>\n<p>Financial support is a key piece of planning for graduate school. At Boston University, we want you to receive the support you need to succeed in your studies.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Details on financial support for <strong>doctoral students<\/strong> can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/admissions\/phd-mfa\/fellowship-aid\/aid-for-phd-students\/\">here on the GRS website<\/a>. Admitted doctoral students, both domestic and international, are eligible to receive up to five years of fellowship funding from Boston University.<\/li>\n<li>Students in our <strong>terminal MA<\/strong> programs are eligible for scholarships to reduce their tuition costs, as well as a variety of student loan programs. Please reach out to GRS for assistance with planning how to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/admissions\/ma-ms\/financial-aid\/\"> finance your MA education<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Please note that students in the terminal MA programs are not eligible for some forms of financial support. However, students are welcome to apply for the doctoral programs, which include the option to receive an MA en route to the PhD, directly after completing their bachelor&#8217;s degree.
