The Master of Arts in French Language and Literature provides comprehensive training in all areas of French studies. Students achieve an in-depth knowledge of French and Francophone literature, its history and its major works. They also develop an advanced understanding of the traditions, aims, and methods of scholarly research in the field.
Many of our MA graduates have gone on to doctoral study, while others have pursued careers in fields such as education and managing international study programs.
Degree Requirements
- An excellent command of written and spoken French
- Eight courses on French literature, cinema, theory, or cultural studies at the 500-level or above. Students must take all offered 800 level French classes.
- Successful completion of the Comprehensive Examination
Timeline
Students undertaking the terminal MA program normally complete their degree in 12 months.
- Eight courses are taken during the academic year, consisting of a theory seminar, a pedagogy class, and six classes on French literature and film.
- Students spend the summer preparing for the comprehensive exam, which is typically taken in late August.
