RS Welcomes Four New Lecturers!

The Department is delighted to welcome four new full-time Lecturers in Spanish who will begin teaching in AY 22-23. Together, they bring a wealth of expertise and experience to our Spanish language program.

Photo of Philip NoonanPhilip Noonan received his PhD from the Department of Romance Studies in 2021 with a dissertation on the art of lecturing in early 20th-century Spain.  His fields of interest include the lecture as a literary genre and other oral art forms, women poets of Spain’s Silver Age of literature, music as revolution and social commentary in Spain and Latin America, and Latin American identity through film. At BU, Philip won awards for outstanding teaching both from RS and GRS, as well as GRS awards for dissertation research in Buenos Aires and Madrid. He worked alongside Professor Alicia Borinsky in the Kilachand Honors College and served as assistant in the Voces Hispánicas program at Boston University, helping stage cultural events for the community. Azlin currently works as a PT Lecturer in our department.

Edgardo Tormos Bigles received his BA from the University of Puerto Rico and a PhD from our department in 2021.  He has taught at Boston College and at Clark University and is currently teaching for us as a PT instructor. Edgardo has expertise in Latin American literature and film has been awarded teaching awards by both RS and GRS. He looks forward to offering language courses that will involve students with the community in the US and Puerto Rico. He is also an advanced speaker of Portuguese.

Photo of Azlin PerdomoAzlin Perdomo is pursuing a EdD in Second Language Instruction at The American College of Education. She has extensive experience teaching all levels of Spanish language and culture at various universities as well as advanced courses in Spanish and Latin American film, the art of storytelling, art and literature, and the USA-Mexican migrant experience. Azlin has won an award for her work exploring the relationship  between the arts and social change and has presented at various conferences on different aspects of pedagogy. Azlin is currently employed as a PT Lecturer in our Department of Romance Studies.

Carmen Torre Pérez will receive her PhD from the University of Pennsylvania this year and will begin teaching for us in January 2023. At Penn, Carmen received the 2019 Dean’s Award for Distinguished Teaching by Graduate Students, combining vigorous training both in literature and in language teaching. She specializes in Latinx and Caribbean literature, film and music, with a dissertation  on Cuban Punk. At Penn, she was the Hispanic Studies representative at the Graduate Student Government of the School of Arts and Sciences; a member of the Latin American and Latinx Studies (LALS) Graduate Advisory Board; co-founder of the Caribe working group at the University of Pennsylvania, and organizer of an annual graduate-student conference.
