Romance Studies Hosts Talk on Belgian Comics

Flyer from Belgian Comics EventRomance Studies is delighted to have hosted a talk by Willem de Graeve, Associate Director of the Belgian Comics Art Museum. De Graeve spoke at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Wednesday, November 6 and then to a packed house at Boston University on Thursday, November 7.

He discussed such topics as:  Why has the literary genre of comics emerged and blossomed so much in Belgium? What is the relevance of a museum of comic art today? How have comics given pride and a sense of place to low-income and forgotten neighborhoods?  What has been the role of women in the comics industry in the past, and how has that evolved?

The event was organized by our own Liliane Dusewoir along with Marie McDonough of the CAS Writing Program and Women & Gender Studies.

Additional support was provided by the BU Academic Enhancement Fund, the BU Illustration Narrative Collaborative, the MIT Global France Seminar, the Consulate General of France, and the Honorary Consulate of Belgium in New England.
