Among those fallen heroes is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rotc\/honor-wall\/bu-world-war-ii\/reines-herbert-s\/\">Army Captain Herbert S. Reines<\/a> (QST &#8217;40), whose\u00a0inclusion on the Honor Wall website has recently assisted with the research efforts of an educator in Normandy, France.<\/p>\n<p>Inspired by\u00a0the story of\u00a0Captain Reines&#8217;\u00a0ultimate\u00a0sacrifice\u00a0in Normandy in 1944, she and her classroom of young students\u00a0will be\u00a0sponsoring\u00a0his\u00a0gravesite at the American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer\u00a0and hope\u00a0to &#8220;to gather as much information as possible about\u00a0this hero, with the aim of visiting schools to present his story and honor his memory.&#8221;\u00a0The French classroom was able to use the Honor Wall to identify Captain Reines\u2019 course of study and class year, and reached out through the site\u2019s dedicated contact email for more information.<\/p>\n<p>Once in touch, DME used online archives and past editions of\u00a0<em>Bostonia<\/em>\u00a0to locate and provide the group with details on Captain Reines\u2019 involvement in BU\u2019s Varsity Fencing Team and ROTC\u2019s Scabbard and Blade Honor Fraternity.\u00a0Together, DME and its new friends in France have demonstrated the power of information sharing in bringing\u00a0the stories of heroes\u00a0like Captain Herbert S. Reines\u00a0back to life. Their memories now live on in the hearts of two grateful nations.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"133\" data-end=\"709\"><strong>BU Honors Its Fallen Heroes:\u00a0 <\/strong>During the Memorial Day weekend, the Division of Military Education placed a floral wreath at the campus memorial to honor those members of the BU community who made the supreme sacrifice while serving the nation.\u00a0 They are not forgotten.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"133\" data-end=\"709\" class=\"\"><strong>BU ROTC Students Honored by the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company<\/strong>: Massachusetts&#8217; Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company (AHAC)\u2014the oldest chartered military organization in the Western Hemisphere\u2014hosted the Cadets and Midshipmen of Boston University on 22 April for a dinner and ceremony at their Faneuil Hall Armory. The AHAC formally recognized <strong data-start=\"419\" data-end=\"434\">Cadet Basak<\/strong> (Air Force), <strong data-start=\"448\" data-end=\"464\">Cadet Kostyk<\/strong> (Army), and <strong data-start=\"477\" data-end=\"500\">Midshipman Campbell<\/strong> (Marine Corps) for superior performance in their respective ROTC programs. Each was afforded the opportunity to tour the AHAC\u2019s museum, network with members, and learn about the Company\u2019s illustrious history.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"711\" data-end=\"1168\" class=\"\">Among the many memorable connections forged, the Cadets and Midshipmen met <strong data-start=\"786\" data-end=\"811\">Mr. Marvin E. Gilmore<\/strong>, who at 101 years old is one of the few surviving World War II veterans. Mr. Gilmore stormed the beaches of Normandy on D-Day and went on to found the first Black-owned and operated commercial bank in Boston. His continued service and sacrifice are a powerful reminder of the legacy our Cadets and Midshipmen will strive to uphold as commissioned officers.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"711\" data-end=\"1168\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/rotc\/files\/2025\/04\/IMG_0054-400x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5976\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rotc\/files\/2025\/04\/IMG_0054-400x300.jpeg 400w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rotc\/files\/2025\/04\/IMG_0054-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rotc\/files\/2025\/04\/IMG_0054-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rotc\/files\/2025\/04\/IMG_0054-1536x1152.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rotc\/files\/2025\/04\/IMG_0054-2048x1536.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>U.S. Navy Names Ship for Megan McClung (MET &#8217;06)<\/strong>:\u00a0 \u00a0On 16 January 2025, Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro announced USS McClung (LSM 1) as the name for the first ship in the new McClung-class of medium landing ships.\u00a0 Secretary Del Toro said \u201cI am honored to name the first ship in this class after Major Megan McClung, a selfless leader and hero who embodied the highest ideals of service, honor, and loyalty to our nation.\u201d<strong><img src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/e\/e7\/Captain_Megan_McClung-01.jpg\/220px-Captain_Megan_McClung-01.jpg\" class=\"alignright\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul><\/ul>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>This naming honors Public Affairs Officer Major Megan M.L. McClung, USMC, (MET &#8217;06) who was killed in action while serving in Iraq in 2006.\u00a0 Megan received a master\u2019s degree in criminal justice from BU in 2006.\u00a0 The excerpt below is from a tribute published in <em>Bostonia<\/em>, 23 May 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">Megan McClung grew up in a Marine Corps family in Mission Viejo, Calif., and received her officer\u2019s commission from the US Naval Academy in 1995. She left active duty in 2004 and went to Iraq as a private contractor. In 2006, she returned to Iraq as a Marine. That year, she completed her online master\u2019s degree program in criminal justice at BU\u2019s Metropolitan College. According to MET, most of her schoolwork was done in a war zone. She was also a hardcore marathon runner and finished six Ironman competitions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">McClung was assigned to the Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group, Camp Pendleton, in California. She died on December 6, 2006, while supporting combat operations in the Al Anbar Governorate province in Iraq.<\/p>\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">The US Naval Institute\u2019s magazine<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>Proceedings<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em>refers to her as the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usni.org\/magazines\/proceedings\/2016\/november\/female-marine-leaves-lasting-legacy-be-bold-be-brief-be-gone\">first female Marine officer to be killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom<\/a>, as well as the first female graduate of the US Naval Academy to be killed in action since the college was founded in 1845.<\/p>\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">Her awards include the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">In May 2007, McClung\u2019s parents attended what would have been her BU Commencement ceremony. That weekend, MET announced a scholarship fund in her name and memory to support students in the online Criminal Justice Program. It is awarded annually to students who exemplify McClung\u2019s academic excellence, strong citizenship and character, and desire to make a meaningful contribution to society.<\/p>\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">\u201cMegan served with the mindset of running to the sound of battle, not away from it,\u201d said her former colleague and classmate Colonel Riccoh Player, in an interview with<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>Proceedings<\/em>. \u201cShe accepted every mission, every billet, every challenge with vigor, creative abandon and a find-a-way-to-make-a-way ethos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A depiction of the McClung class of medium landing ships can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bairdmaritime.com\/security\/naval\/naval-ships\/name-announced-for-lead-vessel-of-new-us-navy-medium-landing-ship-class\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h4 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Past Announcements<\/h4><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>Thanks to Admiral Caudle<\/strong>:\u00a0 The Division of Military Education wishes to thank <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/Leadership\/Flag-Officer-Biographies\/Search\/Article\/2236204\/admiral-daryl-caudle\/\">Admiral Daryl Caudle<\/a>, the Commander of Fleet Forces Command, who visited BU Naval ROTC to receive a briefing on the program from NROTC cadre and to meet with midshipmen to discuss current issues on 21 Nov.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Congratulations to Dr. Douglas Sears<\/strong>:\u00a0 On October 19, 2024, Dr. Douglas A. Sears of Boston University received the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Department_of_Defense_Medal_for_Distinguished_Public_Service\">Distinguished Public Service Award<\/a>, which is the highest award a civilian can receive from the U.S. Department of Defense.\u00a0 Previous recipients include President Barack Obama and the director, Steven Spielberg.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Dr. Sears served as the Chief of Staff to the BU President and as the Director of the BU Division of Military Education from 2011 to 2024. \u00a0As the Director of the Division of Military Education, Dr. Sears tirelessly oversaw the Army, Navy\/Mrines and Air Force ROTC programs at BU and seventeen participating universities and colleges in the greater Boston area. \u00a0His unwavering dedication to the ROTC mission resulted in hundreds of cadets and midshipmen receiving first-rate training and educational preparation for their commissioning into the Armed Services.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Lieutenant General Joseph McGee (U.S. Army), the current Director for Strategy, Plans, and Policy on the Joint Staff at the Pentagon, presented Dr. Sears with the award at the BU Pass-in-Review ceremony at Nickerson Field, as Dr. Sears&#8217;s spouse, Mary, looked on.\u00a0 Former BU President <em>ad interim<\/em> Ken Freeman, Associate Provost Maureen O\u2019Rourke, Professor John Woodward, the current Military Education Director, and the three BU ROTC commanders were on hand to extend their congratulations.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Congratulations to General B. Chance Saltzman:\u00a0 <\/strong>General Saltzman, a BU history and BU Air Force ROTC graduate (Class of 1991), received the CAS Distinguished Alumni Award at a ceremony at BU on 28 September 2024.\u00a0 General Saltzman, a loyal Terrier, is the current Chief of Space Operations for the U.S. Space Force.\u00a0 He is featured in the Summer 2024 edition of <em>Bostonia<\/em> available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/bostonia\/summer-2024\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Passing of Rear Admiral Danielle Barrett<\/strong>:\u00a0 It is with great sadness that I report the loss of Rear Admiral Danielle Barrett, (USN Retired), who passed away on 26 August 2024. Rear Admiral Barrett graduated from BU with a degree in history and received her commission from BU NROTC in 1989.She spent her Navy career in a variety of challenging assignments, starting as a Surface Warfare Officer and eventually becoming a leader in cyber defense and information assurance.\u00a0 She retired from the Navy in 2019.I had the privilege of knowing Rear Admiral Barrett. She visited BU on several occasions and served as the keynote speaker at a BU ROTC Navy commissioning ceremony that I attended.\u00a0 We also were co-panelists at a national security conference.\u00a0 Rear Admiral Barrett was extremely bright, thoughtful, considerate, and personable. A Navy trailblazer, she was a true Patriot and a loyal BU Terrier.Shortly before her passing, she arranged to establish a scholarship fund at BU to help NROTC students in financial need and asked that donations in her memory be directed there.\u00a0\u00a0The scholarship fund link is listed in her<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legacy.com\/us\/obituaries\/buffalonews\/name\/danelle-barrett-obituary?id=56102519\">obituary<\/a>; donors should manually enter Admiral Barrett Scholarship in the comments extends its thanks to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahac.us.com\/\">Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Boston<\/a> for hosting eight BU AF ROTC cadets to a special tour of their museum and a dinner at their impressive headquarters at Faneuil Hall on 16 September 2024.\u00a0 The cadets enjoyed interacting with the AHAC members, many of whom are military veterans, and they learned a great href=\"https:\/\/www.afio.com\/pages\/WOODWARD_BU_Buckley_ROTC_Hall_of_Fame_Ceremony_2022Apr29-1.pdf\">Boston University honored the late William Francis Buckley<\/a>, BU Class of 1955, with induction into its U.S. Army ROTC Hall of Fame.\u00a0 Buckley, an Army combat veteran of Korea and Vietnam, was one of the CIA\u2019s most highly decorated officers.\u00a0 On a CIA assignment in Beirut, he died in the line of duty at the hands of Iranian-backed terrorists in 1985.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/bridge\/archive\/1999\/04-23\/photos\/rotc1.jpeg\" alt=\"ROTC\" width=\"468\" height=\"284\" class=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On 17 April 1999, during BU ROTC&#8217;s 80th Anniversary celebration, Ambassador Hermann Eilts (left), a U.S. Army WW2 veteran, and
