Surface Warfare Officer (Engineering Duty)
Requirements
Surface Warfare Officer Engineering Duty Option candidates must have completed an undergraduate degree in an engineering or scientific field with at least a “B” average and be in the top 25% of their class.
All candidates are initially commissioned as Surface Warfare (116X) officers. Prior to redesignation as an Engineering Duty Officer (1460), and in accordance with the Manual of the Medical Department, a prospective Surface Warfare Officer with ED Option (1160E) must obtain warfare qualification and complete a minimum of 24 months at sea. Officers may apply to execute the option after completing their warfare qualification, but will not be eligible for designation as an Engineering Duty Officer (146X) until their minimum sea tour has been completed. Additionally, officers must have above average performance as rated against their peers.
Career Options
Midshipmen selected for this option may elect not to redesignate into the 146X community after they attain warfare qualification.
Obligation
Active duty obligation for NROTC graduates is 4 years. Upon redesignation to 14XX, officers incur a minimum service obligation of 2 years from date of designator change to be served concurrently with any other obligations.
