{"id":2117,"date":"2021-11-15T09:40:15","date_gmt":"2021-11-15T14:40:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rhcollab\/?p=2117"},"modified":"2021-11-15T09:40:15","modified_gmt":"2021-11-15T14:40:15","slug":"steps-toward-open-source-education-red-hat-research-days-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/rhcollab\/2021\/11\/15\/steps-toward-open-source-education-red-hat-research-days-event\/","title":{"rendered":"Steps Toward Open Source Education &#8211; Red Hat Research Days Event"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During a recent Red Hat Research Days event, Jonathan Appavoo, an Associate Professor of Computer Science and a former Junior Faculty Fellow at the Hariri Institute, presented \u201cSteps Towards Open Source Education&#8221; alongside Orran Krieger, Co-Director of the Red Hat Collaboratory.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Appavoo discussed his work developing educational experiences that teach computer science in a real cloud environment using JupyterBook. He started the project when he realized how difficult it is to get affordable resources for students in higher education.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, Appavoo demonstrated Jupyter, which has an interactive web-browser friendly environment. The collaborative nature of Jupyter can be easily integrated into a classroom setting and can help students in higher education afford computer science resources.
