Completing a Remote Form I-9
This process should only be used if you are physically not located in Boston during the first three days of employment.
- Disregard the electronic invitations to complete Section 1 of your I-9 online sent by onboard@bu.edu.
- You will complete Section 1 of the I-9 on your own using a paper Form I-9.
- Section 2 of the I-9 should be completed by a friend, family member, coworker, or notary on behalf of Boston University. If you use a notary, they should not provide a notary seal on your Form I-9.
- This packet should only be used by US citizens, or permanent residents. Any other citizenship status should contact ISSO.
- You will need a printer, as well as a scanner or copier, to complete this process.

- Complete Section 1 on your own, don’t forget to sign and date it!
- Someone other than yourself must now complete Section 2. They will review a document from list A, or a combination of documents from lists B and C to verify your identity and authorization to be employed in the United States. This list is available on page 9 of the link above.
- They must sign and date the second page.
- They should list “Authorized Representative” as their title, Boston University as the Organization Name, and 25 Buick Street Boston, MA 02215 as the business address.
- Section 3 will not be completed.
- You must then make a copy of the identification used (must be readable). You must include this copy so our team can review. We do not retain this once we quality control the remote I-9.
