COVID-19 Testing Lab Opens Facilities to BU Researchers
With support from the Kilachand Fund, BU’s Clinical Testing Laboratory is being converted into a core facility within the existing Design, Automation, Manufacturing & Processes (DAMP) Lab. The lab’s robots are capable of processing thousands of samples with minimal human input, increasing research output while reducing risk of injury.

Find Funding

Biomedicine and Technology: The BU Evans Center for Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research and the BU Clinical & Translational Science Institute, in collaboration with BU Technology Development, are seeking applications for a Biomedical Innovation and Technology Affinity Research Collaborative by Wednesday, February 1. Physical, chemical, and data science investigators and biomedical researchers are invited to develop a project to address a biomedical and technology need.

Cancer Research: The American Cancer Society has awarded BU a three-year Institutional Research Grant. Early-stage investigators seeking pilot funds for cancer research may apply for a one-year award of $50,000 by Wednesday, December 21.

Health Research with Impact: The Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) recently launched a new website, highlighting ways to engage with the agency. In addition to emphasizing key focus areas the agency will prioritize when funding opportunities are made available, the website also includes information for health researchers interested in a term-limited appointment with the agency. Learn more or apply.

STEM Graduate Student Fellowships: Sandia National Laboratories is accepting applications from STEM graduate students by Tuesday, January 31, for summer fellowships in a variety of research and development fields.

Prepare a Proposal

New Proposal Requirements for NIH-funded Research: The National Institutes of Health (NIH) have issued a new Data Management and Sharing Policy to promote the sharing of scientific data from NIH-funded research. When the policy goes into effect on Wednesday, January 25, the NIH will expect investigators and institutions to plan and budget for managing and sharing data, submit a formal plan for review when applying for funding, and comply with the approved plan.

A University working group is developing materials to help faculty navigate this policy change. Find resources, FAQs, and more on the Research Support site. Investigators are also encouraged to attend a virtual information session on Thursday, January 12.

New Proposal Requirements for DOE-funded Research: As of October 2022, all US Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science funding solicitations require applicants to submit a Promoting Inclusive and Equitable Research (PIER) Plan as an appendix to their proposal narrative. PIER Plans should describe the activities applicants will incorporate to promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in their projects, and will inform funding decisions.

December Sponsored Programs Deadlines: The Sponsored Programs office will be closed from Friday, December 23 until Tuesday, January 3. All items due between December 19 and January 9 must be submitted to your research administrator by Monday, December 12. Read more

Award Status: “Where’s My Award” is a handy tool for tracking where your award stands with the Sponsored Programs setup team. Sponsored Programs is now using Power BI to make this data even easier to access. Learn more on the Award & Subaward Tracker webpage.

Unallowable Expenses: Reviewing accounts and removing unallowable expenses is a critical part of the University’s internal control process, ensuring that all posted expenses are appropriate, allowable, reasonable, approved and supported with documentation. Unallowable costs erroneously charged to an award must be promptly transferred to your departmental University cost center, discretionary account, or other non-sponsored project account. For full guidance please review the unallowable expenses webpage.

Assistant Professor Steve Ramirez, Psychological & Brain Studies (CAS), a neuroscientist studying memory with the goal of approving mental health treatment, has been awarded an inaugural Science Diversity Leadership Award by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. Dr. Ramirez plans to use the award’s $1.15-million five-year grant to advance research and train scientists from underrepresented backgrounds.

Professor Joshua Semeter, Electrical & Computer Engineering (ENG) and director of BU’s Center for Space Physics, was appointed to a NASA team charged with studying “unidentified aerial phenomena” and creating a roadmap to better observe, study, and ultimately identify the phenomena.

Assistant Professor Abdoulaye Ndao, Electrical & Computer Engineering (ENG), received an Innovation Grant from the Kavli Foundation to use innovations in metamaterial design to enhance performance of fluorescence photometry.

Professor Benjamin Sovacool, Earth & Environment (CAS) and director of BU’s Institute for Global Sustainability, is one of the experts providing insight to the United Kingdom regarding its Net-Zero Industry Project. The publication featuring Dr. Sovacool’s expertise highlights emerging industrial “clusters” in the UK that could combine policy, technology, and organization operations as a way to create a roadmap to decarbonization.

Safeguarding Science Toolkit: The National Science Foundation joined federal and university partners to announce the Safeguarding Science toolkit, a resource for the scientific, academic, and emerging-technology sectors to help protect research and technology from theft, abuse, misuse or exploitation.

Update Your Wireless Network: As a reminder, the BU 802.1x wireless network will be retired over intersession break. Once this occurs, eduroam will be the primary wireless network at BU. Instructions for manual configuration of your devices are available on TechWeb.
