Women’s Health Takes Center Stage<\/h3>\n

With a presidential election days away, healthcare is top of mind for many Americans. BU researchers are preparing to gather on Wednesday, November 6 for a\u00a0<\/span>conversation about the importance of women’s health<\/a>\u00a0as its own dedicated field and as part of a broader effort to establish a BU research community around this topic. All faculty and trainees interested in the health of women, intersex people, and gender minorities are invited to share ideas and form new collaborations.<\/span><\/p>\n

New BU Program to Catalyze Large-scale AI Research<\/h3>\n

Artificial intelligence (AI) research increasingly requires costly computational resources that are beyond the reach of individual research groups. To address this challenge, the BU Office of Research and the BU Hariri Institute for Computing have launched a\u00a0<\/span>new resource program<\/a>\u00a0to enable and seed large-scale AI research by providing credits to teams for computing time on high-end graphics processing units.\u00a0The initial proposal deadline is Saturday, November 16.<\/span><\/p>\n

BU Leads Conversation on Global Equity and Pandemics<\/h3>\n

BU is a world leader in the study of infectious diseases. On Thursday, November 7, BU community members are invited to join the BU Center on Emerging Infectious Diseases for its\u00a0<\/span>fall symposium<\/a>\u00a0to learn more about this growing research strength. Attendees will hear from experts exploring challenges in timely access to public health tools during emerging infectious disease events and learn about current international efforts to improve global equity and future directions for global cooperation during outbreaks.\u00a0BU President Melissa Gilliam will present opening remarks.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) supports innovation, research and development, commercialization, and manufacturing in the fields of biopharma, medical devices, diagnostics, and digital health. MLSC is now accepting applications for this year\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Capital & Women\u2019s Health Programs<\/a>\u00a0with a deadline of Friday, December 6.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Support for Student-Adviser Pairs Advancing Equity<\/h3>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>Gilliam Fellows Program<\/a>\u00a0invests in graduate trainees who are committed to advancing equity and inclusion in science, including through community engagement. The fellowship also provides support for thesis advisors to enhance their mentorship skills and develop more inclusive training environments.\u00a0Each student-advisor pair receives an annual award of $53K for up to three years. Applications are due Thursday, December 5.<\/span><\/p>\n

Global Development Fellows Programs<\/h3>\n

The Global Development Policy Center seeks pre- and post-doctoral scholars\u00a0with strong research interest and expertise in global affairs for two fellowship programs. Applications for the\u00a0<\/span>Global Economic Governance Fellows Program<\/a>\u00a0are due by Sunday, December 15, and applications for\u00a0<\/span>Global China Fellows Program<\/a>\u00a0are due Friday, December 20.<\/span><\/p>\n

Disclosures for Foreign Talent Recruitment Programs<\/h3>\n

Federal grant disclosures have become increasingly important, with funding agencies scrutinizing them closely, especially as they relate to foreign talent recruitment programs. Participation in\u00a0malign<\/em>\u00a0foreign talent recruitment programs, which entail compensation by a “foreign country of concern”\u2014presently, China, Russia, North Korea, Iran, or entities within\u2014is prohibited by federal funding agencies and University policy.<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

At the G7 Joint Finance and Health Ministers’ Meeting on October 10, the government of Italy announced a commitment of $21M over the next three years to support the\u00a0Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria Biopharmaceutical Accelerator<\/a> (CARB-X)<\/strong>, a nonprofit global partnership based at BU funding the development of products that target the most serious drug-resistant bacteria.<\/p>\n

Professor\u00a0Chris Chen<\/strong>, Biomedical Engineering (ENG) and director of the BU Biological Design Center, won the Biomedical Engineering Society Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering\u00a0Shu Chien Achievement Award<\/a>\u00a0in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the field of cellular and molecular engineering.<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

Associate Professor\u00a0Alexander Green<\/strong>, Biomedical Engineering (ENG), has been named a 2024\u00a0National Institutes of Health Director\u2019s Transformative Research Award<\/a>\u00a0winner.\u00a0<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

BU\u2019s\u00a0National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories<\/strong>\u00a0(NEIDL) was awarded $7.5M by the\u00a0National Institutes of Health<\/a>\u00a0to modernize and improve its facilities and increase research capacity.<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0BU Photonics Center<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0BU Arts Initiative<\/strong>\u00a0invite visual artists in all media to\u00a0submit proposals<\/a>\u00a0for the Photonics Center art collection,\u00a0with a cash prize of $2,500 and\u00a0a deadline of Thursday, January 2.<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

Professors\u00a0Andrei Ruckenstein<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Claudio Chamon<\/strong>, Physics (CAS), and Professor\u00a0Ran Canetti<\/strong>, Computer Science (CAS), received a $2.8M\u00a0NSF Growing Convergence Research award<\/a>\u00a0\u201cto accelerate the development of trusted, low-overhead tools that enable computation directly on encrypted data so that, for example, confidential data can be shared with an untrusted party who can extract insights from the data without having access to the unencrypted data.\u201d<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

Professor\u00a0Pamela Templer<\/strong>, Biology (CAS), was awarded the\u00a0Sustainability Champion Award<\/a>\u00a0by the BU Institute for Global Sustainability in recognition of her significant contributions to sustainability research.<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

Senior Compliance Specialist\u00a0Ani Zakarian<\/strong>\u00a0received BU’s inaugural Research Compliance Excellence Recognition Award in recognition of the leadership and creativity she brings to her work in the Animal Welfare Program. Her nominator wrote,\u00a0\u201cAni is truly an advocate for institutional compliance in that she pushed hard for solutions for issues and to avoid unnecessary burden on the team and researchers.\u201d<\/u><\/u><\/span><\/p>\n

Professor\u00a0Xin Zhang<\/strong>, Mechanical Engineering (ENG),\u00a0was featured in the November edition of\u00a0American Scientist<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>for her award-winning research on metamaterials and microelectromechanical systems.<\/span><\/p>\n
